“Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States,” pp. 6-7
This is a two-page selection (pp. 6-7) from Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States, the 2004 book by HSUS historian Bernard Unti.
In this excerpt, Unti examines the earliest history of HSUS's programs. In particular, he describes a system of regional and local branches through which HSUS directly participated in the funding and operation of pet shelters:
The original bylaws of The HSUS provided for its ownership and operation of shelter facilities through established branches conceived as integral units of the parent organization. Such ownership proved to be impractical on several grounds, but it did not prevent The HSUS from becoming deeply involved with local animal shelters and their problems. Ultimately, it did so by establishing an affiliates program to forge closer ties to local societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals.
In the paragraph preceding these two pages, Unti also lists HSUS's "principal activities" during the 1950s—including "support for local [humane] societies and individuals trying to form them," through which HSUS was "determined to raise the quality and extent of humane work at the local level."
2010 HSUS “Taking Action For Animals” Conference Program
This document is the official program from the Humane Society of the United States's "Taking Action For Animals" conference held in Washington, DC from July 23 to July 26, 2010.
Of particular interest is the top-sponsor billing of the American Anti-Vivisection Society. The group's ad (see page 25) describes its mission as working to...
legally and effectively end the use of animals in science...
The conference program identifies ten financial sponsors, none of which is directly engaged in pet sheltering (just like HSUS).

2010 “Buckeye Compromise” draft agreement between HSUS and the Ohio Farm Bureau
This is a circulated draft of an agreement in principle reached on June 30, 2010 between:
-
The Humane Society of the United States;
-
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland; and
-
The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation
It outlines a series of actions that the parties reportedly agreed to pursue as a condition of HSUS not pursuing a November 2010 ballot initiative in Ohio. HSUS's proposed ballot question would have dictated specific livestock standards to the state's Livestock Care Standards Board.
HSUS Report of the President, 1988
This is the Humane Society of the United States' annual "Report of the President" for 1988. It contains passages from then-HSUS president John Hoyt as well as a number of vice presidents.
In it, Vice President John Grandy notes: "We won a lawsuit which will go far toward guaranteeing that The HSUS and similar organizations have the right to bring legal actions on behalf of the animals in U.S. District courts across the nation."

HSUS “KIND News” front page, April 2010
This is page one of HSUS's KIND News (Jr. Edition) publication for April 2010; the newsletter targets children in grades 3 and 4 with nine issues each year. It's widely distributed in U.S. elementary school classrooms.
In this issue, HSUS tells an emotional, sensationalized story about the supposed health problems of children who live in rural agricultural areas. HSUS then openly recruits minor children (without parental notification) to lobby their elected legislators, the EPA, and the USDA—to take action against "factory farms":
... It's up to you to tell the government how you feel about these issues!
You can help by writing to your lawmakers and government agencies like the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency ...

1989 HSUS Banquet Brochure, Award Given to Sonny Bloch
This is a selection of text from inside the brochure for the Humane Society of the United States's 1989 Awards Banquet held in Houston, Texas.
At this event, HSUS gave its James Herriott Award to Irwin H. "Sonny" Bloch, a radio host & financial advisor who later pled guilty to tax evasion. He died of lung cancer before he could be sentenced for defrauding investors who listened to his show of $21 million.
HSUS's "James Herriott Award," likely the result of Bloch contributing large amounts of money to HSUS, was presented to him by then-HSUS Board Chairman K. William Wiseman.
