Another Shoe Drops on “4-H-Gate”

Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) is weighing in on the website of The Baltimore Sun today. The 4-H organization is headquartered in Maryland, so it's a natural place to explore just what went wrong last month when a Humane Society of the United States propaganda program managed to sneak into the 4-H national conference.

We're calling it "4-H-Gate." The Congressman calls it a mistake for which there is "no excuse."

Potato, potahto.

Here's more:

HSUS is a radical, activist group committed to working against livestock production and American farmers. It is this commitment that troubled many in the agriculture industry when HSUS was invited to lead a March 23 session titled "Animal Instincts: Service Learning and Animal Welfare" at the 2010 National 4-H Conference in Chevy Chase ...

To invite an organization committed to the eradication of animal agriculture to its national conference is at best a mistake by 4-H and at worst a troubling concession to anti-meat liberals working for the Obama administration at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There is no excuse for 4-H allowing an organization actively working against a staple component of 4-H programs and our diets to present at its national conference.

Harsh words indeed. Click here to read the whole piece.

And The Sun accepts comments, so feel free to remind the editors that HSUS is not a "national humane society," as the title they gave Rep. King's essay suggests.

Oops, almost thought Steve King was being rational, and then he tried to pin THIS on Obama - this isn’t a Democratic/Republican thing. The overwhelming majority of Democrats are happy meat eaters, myself included. What I love about this site and what I make a point of doing is educating Democrats and Republicans alike that HSUS is not what it claims to be, that its agenda is not what they assume it is, and that if they send it their money, it won’t be spent the way they intend.

Both parties are guilty of either stupidity or greed? But some of Obama’s appointees are scary. Sunstein is possibly the most powerful person in his Regulatory position and he is NOT OUR FRIEND.  Think about that one!

I am sick ‘up to here’ with the partisan finger pointing and name calling in animal legislation issues. Nowayne and Mary Lou are both correct - we all need to stop looking for a partisan motive in everything. There should be no Liberal vs Conservative battle when we are fighting these dangerous laws. As long as we label these laws as one or the other we fall right into the plan to ‘divide and conquer’ that has worked so well for HSUS in the dog fancy and pet breeding areas.

I can tell you from personal experience how dangerous this is. In my legislature recently there were two bad anti-animal owner bills being voted on, and in both House and Senate committees the lawmakers voted straight party lines - all Dems voted ‘yes’ and all Republicans voted ‘no’. I am totally disgusted with that result, because it tells me, among other things, that the lawmakers probably didn’t even read, let alone understand, the bills. Do they even care? Are they aware at all of the ramifications?

Shame on Rep. Steve King and any other lawmakers trying to play politics with the rights of Americans to live with animals, use animal products, eat meat, eggs and cheese, and enjoy sports, competitions, outdoor activities and make a decent living for their families from all these legal pursuits.

The two egregious bills in my legislature died on the floor last week, so the completely non-partisan groups and federations who support farmers, ranchers, dog and cat folks, hunters and fishermen will have some more time to attempt to cut through the political name-calling before the same bills come back through the system next session - as they undoubtedly will. We are ‘modestly celebrating’ the death of these bills, but we must be ready for another battle soon.

I hope HumaneWatch.org can help the knee-jerk political responders to turn down the partisan rhetoric. All liberals and conservatives face the same issues, and we must stick together on this, or HSUS will gain and even stronger foothold in our lives.
