Consumer Alert: Humane Society of the United States
UPDATE 2/26/2012: More than 100 people have emailed us saying that they have filed a complaint with the FTC.
[Click here to see how little the Humane Society of the United States gives to pet shelters.]
To all who saw our national TV ad (also viewable below), welcome! First, an announcement, and second, we need your help.
Today we’re releasing a new, 2-page report on deceptive TV fundraising of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). With the help of Campaign Media Analysis Group (CMAG), we were able to analyze every HSUS TV ad that ran between January 2009 and September 2011. What we found was startling.
According to public polling, 71 percent of Americans mistakenly believe that HSUS is a pet-shelter umbrella group and 68 percent wrongly believe that HSUS gives most of its money to pet shelters. There’s a wide gap between perception and reality—and HSUS’s ads help exacerbate it.
More than 85 percent of the animals shown in HSUS ads were dogs and cats. Only 3 of the 28 ads that HSUS ran on television contained a disclaimer that HSUS is independent from local humane societies, and those ads that have a disclaimer didn’t air very often: Less than 100 airings, compared to more than 20,000 airings of ads with no disclaimer. (You can view the full report here.)
Here’s how you can help: Contact the Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint about HSUS's misleading fundraising. You can do this in just a few, quick steps:
1. Go to the FTC’s Complaint Assistant and fill out your personal information.
2. Under Step 1, when it asks you “What kind of company are you complaining about?,” check “Other” and write in “Deceptive 501(c)(3).”
3. When you offer details about your complaint, if you’ve given money to HSUS and believe that you were deceived by its ads, be sure to say so.
4. Let us know when you’ve filed a complaint (email info@HumaneWatch.org).

Give to your LOCAL shelter where it will do the most local good. Spay and neuter all your pets, reduce unwanted reproduction and puppy mills.
I would say, find a no kill shelter to donate to. Not just your local one.
Give to a no-kill shelter or a local rescue group
Great ad. This would be a great ad to run during TV coverage of the Kentucky Derby and the qualification races in the months before the Derby.
I would have added the word “give DIRECTLY to you local shelter”
Including myself, I know so many people that contribute every year.
My sister, before her passing - would give hundreds every year.
ITS A SHAME THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO BE WATCHED IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE HONEST!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!
The local HS here (a one-woman effort!) works so hard to help the animals in our county. Too many people think the HSUS helps our local HS out. The recent wilfires we experienced didn’t even garner a response from HSUS when we asked for their support.
I am sending a donation your way!
Carol L Hedges, DVM
I WANNA KNOW WHERE THE MONEY WENT?!
SECONDLY, I WANNA KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENS TO THE ANIMALS AS I HAVE BEEN CONTRIBUTING FOR YEARS, SO
GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK AND I WILL GO TO MY LOCAL SHELTER AND MAKE SURE WHERE THE MONEY GOES. IF I FIND THAT POLITICIANS ARE POCKETING THIS MONEY…I GUARENTEE THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY
DONNA WILLIS
NC
Rick Berman, I’d like to hug you.
I donate to both. Because I realize I am contributing to two different entities.
I never thought HSUS supported local shelters. In fact I have been a shelter volunteer for over a decade. I am fully aware that a local shelter is supported by community donations and volunteer workers. The local shelters are not part of a large corporation. They need support from their communities.
The HSUS works on a national level. My donations to them support national efforts to reform cruelty to animals on all levels. Including but not limited to addressing the pet-overpopulation in America. I think that may be something that confuses people.
To Carol Hedges, it saddens me that your community is not helping the local shelter in your area.
The most successful shelter I have seen is in Naperville, IL. They always have an abundance of volunteers, donations and successful fundraisers. Perhaps the shelter director could get enough support to visit them and see how they run their shelter.
WHEEEEEHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
maybe run it during Westminster too! or the Purina events! of course this costs YOU money!!
let’s all support Humane WATCH! and watch H$U$ suck hind tit for a change. { ok, that’s not nice, but…]
YOU ROCK!!!!!!!! Let’s make this video got VIRAL.. send it out to as many people as you can
Now that the news is out, please donate to your local, no-kill shelters, or rescues. Your money to them, DOES go where it helps these animals directly.
Sad, that so many are stealing, and the way they are doing it, simply, if we say nothing, it will continue. At the same time, human rights are at stake. The battle we are in is large, the enemy we fight is truly un American.
WONDERFUL commercial! LOTS of people will see that one! What channel did it air on? Animal Planet?
Their main agenda is to stop all meat production in the United States. They are trying to ruin a way of life that they do not approve of.
Thank You for your ad. Would like to see more in the future. The public needs to be educated about the money machine (HSUS). They are trying to get rid of all agriculture. They agenda is to make all of us vegans with no pets for companionship. Keep up the good work. I have a donation on the way to help to continue to educate the Public.
thay got me for 480.oo but no more, how low canyou go?
I support the HSUS. No, they don’t give much money to shelters directly. But they do a lot of valuable advertising that shows how animals are mistreated and abused; they have a strong lobby in Washington that keeps an eye on laws that should be passed or changed; they keep shelters in general at the forefront by their advertising; they provide a lot of valuable information about animals and shelters to the public via their website; and I’m sure they do other work that is helpful to animals.
need to get the word out, facebook my space, all our networks
The humane society is not trying to stop meat production. It would like to see a standard of care adopted.
Wouldn’t most people like to know that the animals they consume were not treated inhumanely before their slaughter. We Americans are famous for plunking our heads into the sand. “No! Don’t tell me! I don’t want to know! It will change how I feel about my steak forever!”
And, trust me, you DON’T want to know. It’s brutal. All of it. The whole process.
(Ignore the statements if you are a farmer who cares for your animals. But you know what goes on, too.)
Erin I am afraid you are still very much duped by the HSUS as of yet. They do not want better care for the animals you consume! They don’t want you to comsume them at all period! HSUS is using all the millions of dollars caring people donate to help starving animals to slowly, stealthily, and SURELY choke Americans, and their animals to death! They want Extinction to all domestic animals, so get ready to live on grass all you who are still duped by this HUGE Multimillion dollar HSUS! These stories that they constantly run over TV networks, and Internet are mostly false, and totally set up by their own employers. Read all the info on Humane Watch, and you will be enlightened, or are you an HSUS employee Erin???
Some of you who are donating to the HSUS should to more homework on where a HUGE amount of the money you are donating goes. Check out the HUGE amount of money going into not only their pockets, but their retirement plans. Also, they are being investigated by the IRS. Hmmmmmmm??? I’d sure be questioning where MY money went if I were you people. HSUS wants to put an end to animal ownership in ANY form! That means no pets along with becoming a vegan. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing. If you don’t beleive this, I’ve got a bridge to sell you!!
I am totally disgusted at the pitiful animals on these videos,I feel as if I have been decieved.I assumed the HSUS was an animal friendly society ... was I wrong ???
I do not support the HSUS and I do not understand how those on here can comment in support of them. They are strongly in bed with PETA. As far as “lobbying” I think that should be illegal. Too much money is slipped into pockets for certain votes and it does NOT benefit our farmers, it actually hurts them. HSUS lobbied for the NAIS program. It is in place here in Michigan and has hurt livestock farming in Michigan. I was a cattle farmer and we had to give it up because it was outrageous. Big brother has their thumb on us farmers enough already we do not need more government but less! As for HSUS helping with oversight I doubt that a lot. They have done more damage than good. We are one of the worst countries for outrageous laws pushed by lobbyists. HSUS isn’t out for the welfare of animals but for the welfare of their directors, CEO, etc. The purport they help animals yet where is all the money going? Instead of lining pockets put it where it is needed most in small shelters that have very little coming in. I am so sick of PETA and HSUS. Next they will say we can’t walk outside because we might squash a bug and disturb the ecosystem. Sorry just had to rant.
WHAT A GREAT VIDEO.. HOPE MANY WILL WATCH AND UNDERSTAND!! YES..SPAY/NEUTER.. VISIT YOUR LOCAL SHELTER AND VOLUNTEER.. OR TO DONATE!!
I’m writing here on behalf of several animals here
1 the ally cat i fed when i was a kid that i called the hsus about and they did nothing
2 the litter of kittens i found one year also ingnored by the philly hsus
3 the little blonde scruffy dog i’ve seen near the dumpsters this year also ignored by the hsus
AND LAST MY NOT LEAST my dog Ezio who was abandonded in a field and if it wasnt for the farmer who took him to the shelter (because hsus doesnt go out and get the animals you gotta bring them to the shelter) Ezio would have died before his first Birthday
it is sad to see so many people still brainwashed by the hsus just goes to show you cain’t fix stupid .
The only ‘shelter’ that i donate to, anymore, is “Best Friends” in Utah…great place!!!!
ERIN, the Humane Society of the United States doesn’t care about farm animals any more than they do dogs and cats. I support the far more respected, 250,000 member Humane Farming Association, whose director recently called Pacelle’s deal with United Egg Producers “the greatest betrayal in animal welfare history.”
LADY JUDITH WEAVER, THE $200 million HSUS’s advertising isn’t educating the public, it’s begging and pleading for “$19 a month” on the backs of suffering shelter animals that HSUS is too greedy to help. Their deceptive advertising is stealing funds and publicity from reputable charities and rescuers. HSUS’s “strong lobby” in DC is funded by those $19 a month donations. HSUS shamelessly violates the IRS rules re lobbying by tax-exempt charities, spending far more on political battles than the law allows.
Finally, far more “valuable information” on shelters, dogs and cats can be found on countless pet-related websites, books, and media outlets. If you want to buy a Euthanasia Training Manual or video, however, HSUS’s website IS the place to go. Speaking of which, I suggest you read “The Indictment of Wayne Pacelle” by No-Kill sheltering pioneer Nathan Winograd. Then, if you still want to defend and donate to the HSUS, there’s really nothing left to say.
The ‘Better Business Bureau’ should be CALLED !!

“Erin” and “Lady Judith Weaver”, and anyone else who foolishly believes that the HSUS does good things for animals…..they don’t. HSUS lobbies AGAINST no kill sheltering! They do not help animals, the more torture and abuse out there, the more they can play it up for donations with which they pad their fat pension plans, and to bribe politicians to push their anti-animal ownership legislation. The HSUS killed the bills that would have established “no kill” sheltering methods in both Texas and California. They urged the judge in the Vick case to kill all the dogs, even the puppies! Meanwhile, they collected donations for the Vick dogs…dogs that they never had possession of and never intended to help! The HSUS lobbies for laws that make pet ownership more expensive and inconvenient. They do NOT want to promote farm animal welfare, their actual goal is the elimination of animal agriculture. Did you know that Wayne Pacelle, the president of HSUS, has stated: “We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.” And HSUS employee John Goodwin has stated “My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.” In 2006, HSUS Vice President Miyun Park stated at a conference: “We don’t want any of these animals to be raised and killed [for food]...unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of waiting until we have the opportunity to get rid of the entire industry.
And so because of that, a number of organizations
including the Humane Society of the United
States, we work on promoting veganism…
Are we saying that cage-free eggs are the way to
go? No, that’s not what we’re saying. But we’re
saying it’s a step in the right direction…”
So if you support working toward a vegan society devoid of domestic animals, then by all means keep giving to HSUS. If you, like most of us, enjoy traditional animal pastimes like farming, fishing and pet ownership, the HSUS has proclaimed themselves to be your enemy. Scan the archives here, and you will be shocked at what you learn.
Still a few people posting here will support HSUS. Yes, they do know what HSUS is all about but that’s their sense of power over others. I guess facts don’t matter to these people as after so many cups of kool-aid you can’t help buy into the lies.
Therese, here’s some news for you. There is no pet overpopulation in the US. If there was, why would we be importing thousands of dogs from other countries? Yes, some areas do have high numbers of animals because those aren’t the cute and cuddly ones. They’re the medium sized older dogs that others claim are rampant and taking up space JUST to justify the mass slaughter of these animals. Just some food for though.
Actually, google “PETA Kills Animals” to find out what THEY are all about. PETA is in bed with HSUS. HSUS is just PETA in suits. They let PETA make all of those foolish videos, and do all of those stupid stunts, and they themselves pretend to be upstanding, caring people. They are NOT. Seriously, google “PETA KILLS ANIMALS”. You will be shocked at how this so called organization states they are People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. People need to wake up about these two organizations, who are reaping millions of dollars from the public who thinks their $$ is going to save animals.
Ok first off HSUS is one big MUTIMILLION dollar organization that does nothing but pocket your money and make adds full of lies. Us Missourians found out first and and defeated the HSUS funded bill to limit the number of domesticated animals you can own. Not just dogs people the bill did not say dogs it said DOMESTICATED ANIMALS. Because all the city folk believe in the hsus the bill passed but was revised protecting our rights to own and care for livestock. Had that not been revised, every cattle farmer dairy horse rancher and any other operation would of been downsized out of existance. WAKE UP. Missouri last time i checked was the number 3 beef producer in the country, and im one of them. THat would of destroyed this state. and the rest of you that eat beef.
From what I have read HSUS only gives 1% of their revenue to shelters. Millions of animals are put down every year, because of lack of funds at our local shelters. It is a disgrace that the televison producers allow these adds to be put on TV. I guess the money they get for the adds means more to them than what the adds have cheated the nieve public out of their money in hopes that they can help animals and save their life’s. Shame on the television producers and their board of directors. Hopefully, one of their beloved pets don’t end up in one of these under funded shelters and are put down before they can find their loved pet. Everyone reeps what the sew. Shame - Shame
So all of you who are saying these things about PETA and HSUS give me links!!!! Cuz If im going to believe this and put my support towards opposing these assholes then i need proof
and if this is true I will be telling some very influential people. and holdin up some signs
THe CEO of the HSUS makes over 269,000 a year, what a rip-off, if they truly loved animals they would be working for expenses only. The HSUS spends very little of the funds they collect on actual animal care, do not donate to this scam organization.
Shawna, you don’t NEED “links” from us, all you have to do is use GOOGLE! Google “PETA KILLS ANIMALS”. You will be APPALLED at what they did, and got CAUGHT at it. And you can bet that if they got caught THIS time, how many other times did they NOT get caught. It’s like getting traffic tickets. It would be foolish for someone to think a person got one ticket speeding, and that was the ONLY time they were speeding. There were most likely hundreds of times they were speeding, but this ONE time, they got caught. HSUS and PETA are under fire, because the public is finally finding out their “dirty little secrets”.
Wow that is disgusting. I signed the PETA petition.
I will never DONATE to HSUS again… Big scam! Pray for the animals. I will only support no kill shelters in my area. No more PETA either…Enough proof, evidance, investigation, and enough said here!!! Thank-you soo much for your ad “VIDEO” you need to air it on tv!! Respectfully yours, Karen. God Bless all the animals in need…
The HSUS has done far more harm than good! Because of them many organizations with the words Humane Society in their names have lost donations and support and have had to spend hard fought dollars to educate the public.
As an individual involved in Agriculture one has to understand that there are good and bad in every industry. Most farmers and rancher treat their livestock well because it is their way of life.
If some of the information that we have given, PROVING that HSUS and PETA are “NOT” helpful organizations, has stopped anyone from donating, we who are keeping on top of what they are all about, are slowly WINNING (to quote Charlie Sheen, LOL). We are showing people where to put their money so it actually GETS to the animals, and not into the pockets of these ultra-rich CEO’s, etc.
And to the person who works in the agricultural industry, I pray that you can continue to stand up against this “vegan” agenda. As you said, there are always the “bad” ones in any industry, but the good ones are the ones that need to be supported by us, against these factions.
And, for those who think ALL dog breeders are BAD, I want to tell you, that over 40 years, I bred and showed dogs. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, as in any other part of living. There ARE good dog breeders out there, who love and care for the animals they own and produce for the public. Those who DO care, are the ones that you also need to support by fighting against PETA and HSUS, because they are who you, your children, your grandchildren, and hopefully THEIR’S, will be able to continue to get healthy, well socialized pets, who’s parents are health tested, and who live IN the breeder’s home or in clean, well cared for kennels. They are NOT all like those pictures of the sad faces. Support them, because they also sell their pets on Spay/Neuter contracts, which is where the overpopulation can be controlled in a “logical” way. If you contact a breeder for a puppy, if they do NOT require spay/neuter of pets, walk away and find one who does because then you are supporting the GOOD breeders.
And for those who wish to rescue WOO HOO! Find a rescue of the breed you want, and adopt. Go to a shelter, adopt. There ARE good purebred dogs in shelters also, as the rescues cannot always take them in, if they are full. If you prefer an All American Mutt (wonderful mixed breeds), then by all means, a shelter is the place to go.
But do NOT believe all the propaganda you see on TV and in other ads. Not ALL breeders are BAD breeders. Find the right one, and you find a healthy, happy and well socialized puppy or adult, and a lifetime of help from the breeder. Wishing you all luck in finding the pet of your choice
I would like to add, no kill is okay unless the dog is aggressive, I can’t stand shelters that try to adopt out aggressive dogs that could injure or kill a child.
As to the agriculture side, too many people have never been on a farm and have no clue what that entails. They will think something that is in the best interest of the animal is cruel. My favorite was a time when HSUS went after the dairy farmers and thought twisting a cow’s tail was inhumane. Any person who has ever been on a farm knows that if a cow doesn’t get up after delivery you do whatever necessary to get that cow up or she will die. If you need to load a cow and it doesn’t want to move, twisting it’s tail is the quickest way to get it moving. It is a large animal not one you can just pick up and put in the trailer or one you can just put a lead rope on and lead it into a trailer.
Farmers and ranchers don’t get to sit in offices in their suits and go home at 5 and sit in front of their tv. They have long days and sometimes longer nights, they have to get their work done efficiently and don’t have the time or energy to sit and worry if some idiot sitting in their office is going to think what they are doing is inhumane, they do what they have to do and it’s always in the best interest of their animal. A thin, sick cow or dead cow isn’t going to bring much money. So why in the hell would they abuse or starve their animals?
The true problem is 99.5% of Americans are not farmers/ranchers and that other .5% is having to work day and night to feed everyone else. Society should be thanking them not trying to exterminate them, but Americans seem hell bent on cutting off their nose to spite their face.
AMEN! While I was never a farmer, my husband and I raised our own cows for food, pigs, chickents, rabbits, etc. To the “outside” world, methods used may seem cruel. But you use what you know is going to be the most humane way for them. You raise these animals. Many people love these animals almost as pets, knowing what they are raising them for, so they will make sure the lives, and deaths of the animals, are the best possible. These animals in the wild, would not have had guaranteed food every day. Their deaths could be slow ones from injuries, or a little faster ones as prey for other animals. In the end, they all die, just as we do also. That is the circle of life. When you are dealing with 1,000 pound PLUS animals, you cannot play “cutsie” with them. With horses, in order to float their teeth, or tube worm them in days of old, you had to use a lip chain (twitch) to control them. Cruel? No. It is a way to make an animal 5 to 10 times larger than you, allow you to do what is necessary for their own good. To those who have never worked around large animals, it seems cruel. But it is a way of surviving while dealing with those animals.
Most farmers and ranchers, as you said, count on each and every animal they are raising, to be able to bring in money to the facility, and they are not going to do something to that animal which would render it useless for the end product.
I pray that people wake up soon, or there will be NO ONE who will be willing to hold themselves up to such scrutiny, to make a living. They will change careers and where will we be. Veganism is fine for those who choose it. But for those who do not, there has to be a way of feeding the masses without being vilified for doing what needs to be done. And yes, you are so right. A cow after calving, MUST be gotten back up on her feet, or she may die. There will always be cruel people in many facets of the world. Nothing that we do will stop that. But what we CAN do, is stop trying to make a way of life, raising animals for meat, is not so vilified so as to force all who do so, out of business. Do we REALLY want to eat genetically engineered foods?????
I USE TO ALWAYS FAITHFULLY PAY MY MONTHLY AMOUNT, BUT AFTER LEARNING MONTHS AGO FROM ANOTHER SORCE THAT THEY ARE LIKE THIS, I STOPPED AND STARTED GIVING TO THOSE THAT I KNOW WHO DO HELP ANIMALS. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOU KNOW IT HELPS THE ANIMALS!!
You guys are getting even more LOW then usual..WOW don’t support them, don’t donate to them…Donate to a local shelter or resuce group in your town.. Your money doesnt’ go to the animals…
Hsus is bad for the animals and America
Please STOP DONATING TO HSUS! NO MORE HSUS!!!
HSUS is such a scam! Last year I made two donations. May 2011 $19.00. June 2011 19.00 = $38.00. Ceo, employees, ads, advertizements, postage, supplies, gifts, etc. Need I go on? I was offered 2 gifts: Fleece jacket, and tote bag! After my last pledge payment history was to paid to date $38.00. I never recieved either gift! Nor ANY GIFT!!! I called HSUS 12X! Where’s my gift? Where’s the gifts? HSUS replies “We are sorry, you should have received them…” Then they wanted the yearly pledge total of $209.00. I told HSUS> “I’m not donating any more money, until I receive the 2 gifts as promised on TV commercial, and GIFTS PROMISED On my pledge payment statement sent to me by mail…” Then I recently found out that HSUS got $37.62, and THE ANIMALS ONLY GOT .38CENTS… I will never give, {DONATE} to HSUS ever again, and neither will anyone I know! Since Last year I’m still calling HSUS> Inquiring about the gifts I never recieved! Same reply. I don’t want the gifts now> I WOULD NEVER WEAR THAT FLEECE JACKET W/THE PATCH “HSUS” I DO NOT SUPPORT THEM> KNOWING THE ANIMALS ONLY GET 1%. Futhermore, HSUS LIES! This is an example of HSUS=FALSE ADVERTIZEMENT! I never really cared bout the gifts. I only care about the animals well-being> It’s the point I’m trying to make here> YOU’ll GET 2 FREE GIFT IF YOU DONATE EVEN JUST ONCE! ??? HUH? I NEVER GOT 2 GIFTS< I ONLY RECEIVE “ALL ANIMALS MAGAZINE” that was promised also. Whoppee> I throw All Animals Magazines away in monthly recycle bin. I HAVE NO FURTHER INTEREST ANYMORE. I am soo appauled by THE HSUS>SICKENED> ASHAMED THAT I WAS EVEN A 2011 MEMBER. God Bless HUMANEWATCH>! My businness w/HSUS is not yet finished! I feel that the HSUS is a sick, barbaric organization that must be ended forever. No civilized human being in this society would donate to HSUS if they new the truth about this activity that is taking place! NO GIFTS! FALSE HOPES! FALSE ADVERTISEMENT! ANIMALS ONLY GET 1%! Those animals sitting in a cold stainless steal cage, COLD CONCRETE FLOOR, should I say more? Waiting for the next crumb of food from a mouse or rat, etc. ONLY GET 1%. ONLY GET ONE CHANCE OF LIFE…soo sickened, sadened, I’ve been had. Karen J. Ferguson
Karen, I’m disgusted by what your experience was with H$U$!! Here you did what you were asked (donated money) and they didn’t live up to their end of the bargain in any way. Of course, the gifts were inconsequential when you think about how little of what you donated went to the animals. But still, false advertising.
If I were you, I’d file a complaint with the BBB in the town where their main offices are. I would also contact the editor of Humane Watch and ask if you can submit an article about your experience, and how you were deceived.
I’m so glad for Humane Watch, because it’s about time this organization gets taken down. They have scammed millions from people who don’t have it, but who have hearts and want to help animals.
Thank you for your comments
Teri, we have laws on the books now regarding animal cruelty. Enforce the laws we have, we don’t need more laws. In addition HSUS never has a commercial that says donate money so we can lobby for more laws. They show cute little puppies and kittens and say save them. Also our rules say if you’re non-profit you can only spend a small percentage of your money lobbying.
Erin, quit listening to the bs HSUS is selling. At least 95% of farmers/ranchers take care of their animals. Unhealthy or poorly treated animals don’t make you money. HSUS would have you believe farmers/ranchers are pumping their animals full of antibiotics. Antibiotics are expensive which cut down on profits. Would you think it was child abuse if your child had a bacterial infection and you refused to give him/her antibiotics that could make them well? That is why farmers/ranchers give antibiotics, to make sick animals well. Most farmers/ranchers when they give antibiotics, they give probiotics as well, these costs add up and they’re only doing it when they need to do it, because it’s not cost effective to give antibiotics to an animal needlessly. They vaccinate their animals to prevent them from getting diseases, the same as we vaccinate our kids and our dogs.
Why don’t you and other people like you instead of believing everything you hear, go visit a farm and see how they do it and let them explain to you why they do what they do.
So many wonderful ideas and information has been posted, there is not much else to say, BUT I would offer ONE suggestion. Every time an ad for HSUS comes on my TV, I change the station and I do not go back to finish the program.
Now, I know that sounds like a pain, but goodness, with all the stations we now have available to us, or at least most of us, we can find a replacment program without too much trouble.
Wonder what would happen to the TV stations if they knew that everytime they ran an HSUS commercial, aka con job, that the viewers would change their program selection? AND be sure to let them know you are doing it.
A small act, but it would hit them where it hurts, their pocketbooks. Sadly, that is sometimes our only recourse, but it’s a good one. So, I say HOORAY for channel surfing. Let’s surf HSUS ads off the air.
Shelly, some people just will NEVER “get it” about both PETA and HSUS. Sad, because without realizing it, they are adding to the numbers that are going to, in the end, cause more pain and suffering to animals. PETA has euthanized more pets than any shelters (percentage wise) and every time someone donates to them, their money goes to those radicals helping to kill more animals. With farming, as you said, most farmers/ranchers, take VERY good care of their animals. they get paid by weight so and animal that is sick and underweight, won’t bring much or anything at all. As in anything, there will ALWAYS be those who are cutting costs, and not caring for their animals. But to punish EVERY farmer/rancher is ridiculous. Those who are not doing it right, will eventually lose out as they won’t be able to make as much money that is needed. Do NOT punish the masses, for a few bad farmers/rachers. Same with pets. Today’s pets are better cared for than at any time during OUR lifetimes. People spend more money to make sure their pets are vaccinated, healthy and lead good lives. Concentrate on the bad ones, and leave the good ones alone.
Connie, better yet, would be to contact that TV station and let them KNOW about why you will not watch their station anymore. Explain to them that they are supporting organizations that are not putting their money (donated money) where their mouths are, and who are in actuality, trying to end pet ownership and meat farming. Ask them to do their research. Maybe they will stop selling airtime to both PETA and HSUS. After all, it’s US as the consumers who pay the money that keeps these stations on air. Hit them in their pocketbooks.
AMEN, Shelly!
Also, I read that some law had been passed on egg farmers…they have to “let the hens out of the cages”. Great! Sure it’s sad if you think about how you would like being in a cage, but most of the people donating don’t have any animal sense. If an animal is raised in a cage, that is what it knows. It does not miss being outside the cage because it has never been outside the cage. It feels safe in it’s cage. That is it’s home. Kennel dogs are the same way…They are raised in those cages…they feel safe in their cages. Those dogs in the ads are shaking because all those people and cameras are making them nervous…it’s not familiar to them. There is a big “to do” over pig farming. Again, the pigs don’t know any other life, therefore, they don’t miss it. It costs lots of money for all these farmers to adapt to these new laws the H$U$ keeps getting passed…and the cost is going to get passed right on down to us…the consumers. The H$U$ is getting laws passed against hunting, against pig farms, against horse slaughter…OH, let’s talk horse slaughter. I raise and train horses. Ten years ago I made a partial living doing this. When the H$U$ got the slaughter houses messed up, the bottom fell out of the horse market. Believe it or not, horses don’t live forever. They also do not ALL come with a willness to learn. There are horses that NEED to go to the slaughter house. Some of you say “NO!”, but if I had some that had bad dispositions and were not willing to open up to humans, would you be willing to come get them and give them a “forever” home…costing you a minimum of $100 a month to feed and care for? No, you wouldn’t. I’m not going to feed something that can’t do it’s job for me either. Horses are beasts of burden…they have to work for their keep. Breeder dogs were bought just for that and the people that are raising good bred dogs are not going to have crummy conditions for their dogs…they can’t sell crummy dogs. The dogs in some of these ads get me and I can’t understand why others can’t see what I see. The shih-tzu that is blind and has lost most of his teeth…OMG…The dog looks to be 6 to 8 years old. Bug eyed dogs usually do go blind. Inside dogs are often fed canned dog food…that WILL make their teeth fall out. I think they even said something about a “stab wound”...get real. The dog is old and worn out (face it) and they just hope they can fix him up and someone will come and adopt him. Why? So he can go to a new home, where he doesn’t know the new people and run into their walls for the next few months until he dies? Put him to sleep! He has lived a long life for a small dog and he probably is not going to be happy not being with his original owner anyway. Now, let’s get to Betty (she is the ASPCA ad dog). Listen to the wording this very young girl uses as she talks about Betty. “She seems to be”, “I think she”, “appears to be”, etc. Betty is not skinny…especially to have those 5 to 6 week old “new born” pups pulling milk off of her. Her eyes are clear and no crap in the corners (sign of worms) and her coat is shiny. The girl “thinks” Betty has a broken bone in her back, but they put the pups up on the table with her and let them crawl all over her…that ought to be good for a broken back. At the beginning, it says something like she got hit by a car…was found in her dog house…couldn’t even get to her water bowl. Well, she got out of the road and made it back to her dog house, I BET she could get to her water bowl if she wanted to. The H$U$ makes most of this crap up and people that KNOW animals KNOW this. Don’t be had by the H$U$. Give to your local shelters and volunteer…don’t throw your money away to people that are only trying to take away American’s rights to owning animals and rid the world of animals. I’m not living off of salad and the only “meatless Monday” we are going to have around here is when I’m broke. God bless all of you that are actually helping animals and keep up the good work.
Boy Sarah, you said a mouthful. I too was a horsewoman for many years. I used to barrel race, and also showed in halter classes. My horses had to earn their keep. Earning it, meant me riding them mostly on the country roads, or trail rides. If the horses didn’t want to be ridden, they would let you know by tossing your arse on the ground, LOL. It’s what they know. Our horses of today have it pretty cushy. Years ago, they had to pull wagons as that was the only transport before cars were invented. They carried men off to war, they pulled plows (which was a very hard, tiring job). They were put on this earth for a reason. today’s horses are ridden maybe once or twice a week, unless they are “job” horses (show, jumping, dressage, etc), so they have it pretty good. I too realize the need for slaughter houses. What do we do with horses that have gotten too old to be ridden, and hay is up to $5.00 a bale? Yes, we could put them down like we do dogs. But wait!! WHERE do we bury them??? You cannot bury livestock on your property like you can a dog. So, you find a soap or glue company to come and get them for you, and to render into soap or glue. That is all you CAN do. Horse meat has been sold for almost 50 years, but it could not be slaughtered here in the states. So, the horses were loaded up into stock trailers, and headed to Canada, where they CAN be sold for meat to other countries. If they open up slaughter houses for horses HERE, that will save those horses much pain and suffering, being transported. Many of those horses fall down, are seriously injured, and must endure a lot of pain on that trip. Some aren’t fed or watered for days, as the person driving that truck could care less. So, by opening up the slaughter houses here, it saves those horses a lot of pain and suffering they’d endure in those stock trucks.
No one wants to think of “Fury” or Flicka” being slaughtered. I love horses. their beauty, their magnificence. But it is just a hard fact, that when they are old and must be put out of their pain, there just isn’t a viable answer unless they are sold for slaughter. Try hiding a grave for a 1,200 pound animal!
I also agree about how farmers are being targeted all the time. If someone isn’t a farmer, they don’t realize that those chickens are kept in crates because otherwise, they peck each other to death. Yes, if a farmer has a HUGE area where they can run, cage free, that’s great. But not all farmers have that. And the ones who raise chickens that go to Tyson, and other chicken wholesalers, must raise literally thousands of chickens to make a profit. So, they are raised in crates for their lives, but know NO differently.
Think of it this way. A family does not have a TV. WE think it’s horrible. Oh HOW can you live without TV. Well, they live without it as that is what they know. THey don’t feel they are doing without anything at all. That’s what they know, so they do not miss CSI, or HGTV, or other TV shows. It’s the same with chickens, pigs, etc. They don’t KNOW any other life, so it is not hard for them. Being in cages is for their own safety.
That’s the problem with PETA and HSUS. They do NOT know how to farm, or how to raise animals. So THEY “think” something is cruel, when in fact, it’s not. Animals don’t “think” in human terms. They are not saying to themselves “Gee, I wish I didn’t have to spend my life in this crate”, or “Gee, I don’t want to be in this pig pen, so my piglets don’t get squished by me”. They don’t KNOW anything other than this.
WAKE UP PEOPLE! PETA and HSUS are NOT about helping animals, they are for turning us all into vegans, and taking our rights to own pets, raise meat, or have seeing eye dogs, away from us. They have a “twisted” way of thinking things.
Ignorance is bliss when it comes to tugging on your heart strings. Most people see those ads H$U$ airs where dogs w/ the big sad eyes are in cages seemingly begging for help. H$U$ does next to nothing for those animals. Instead they use the money they collect by sending out those worthless mailings w/ stickers to pay those lobbyists in Washington. 99.9% of the lobbyists are crooks. Do your research people. H$U$ goes from one project to another. The puppy mills for example are still alive and well, and for the past 20 plus yrs they have been “lobbying” Washington to stop them… Ha ! AFTER 20 yrs one would think they would be outlaw’d but they are not. Owners of mills get a slap on the hand and a warning and they turn right around and become sneakier. Rarely do they even see the inside of a jail cell. The pet stores still do business with these idiots and so the cycle continues. Everyone is claiming ignorance and they know they can get away with it… Thank you to the LAWYERS who defend them. Ugh… we wouldn’t want to step on their rights to own animals. It’s a joke. I got a e-mail the other day about egg laying chickens. REALLY !!! First it’s the baby seals in Canada and before you chop my head off YES I think that’s cruel but LYING to the public to get money, is not the way to get things to change. HSUS should NOT be tax exempt, their employees make more money than you would think, it’s a money making scam. WE THE PEOPLE don’t need Washington to change laws at the State level, if we can strengthen our local laws first to make people responsible for every animal they breed and DEMAND that the local authorities enforce the laws and make cruelty a stronger JAIL serving sentence than people will think twice about doing it again… A couple days in the clink isn’t going to do a damn thing… Make it YRS… No tolerance. Stop flushing your money into H$U$ give to your local no kill shelter, don’t purchase animals from pet stores but only from reputable breeders who pay a fee for the right to breed a certain amount of animals. NEVER buy a puppy off the street corner, make it a crime to sell puppies if you don’t have a license and all the required paperwork. START MAKING PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS.. and take away their rights to own animals if they are convicted. NO MORE ANIMALS (Michael Vick) ugh…
Some very good information in all of these comments. Sara - I never heard that thing about crap in the corners of the eyes are an indication of worms. Could you explain a bit more? or reference where more info is available?
I don’t believe for one minute that hsus gives a rip about animals in any way shape or form. They have discovered a way to scam people out of money and that is all it is. Just a scam, just a sales pitch. Just a very effective way of getting good hearted people to part with their money.
Complaining to the FTC is a great way to go after them. False advertising all the way. Maybe their script doesn’t say they are using the money for lobbying, but the videos they show lead people to believe the money goes for animals and their $19 a month definitely makes people think they are helping shelter animals. Nope, they don’t do none of that.
Complaining to the television networks might also be helpful. ABC, CBS, NBC, let them know what you think of these deplorable, deceptive ads. The more people that do that the more likely they will drop them. I definitely like that idea.
TC Graves…..VERY WELL SAID!
~First, sincere thanks for what you are doing “Humane Watch”.
~Second, thanks for most of the above posters for much of what each of you shared as well.
~Third, I take great issue w/the comments made by Sarah re critters who know no other life, so in other words - she is saying “this is ok.” OMGosh, heck no!
~Let us consider an abused/severely neglected person - they too have “known nothing else” - so, ought we mind our own business, let the abuse/neglect continue bec the victim “knows no different!?!?!?!” Please.
~It’s that very mentality which allows some human beings to continue committing heinous acts of severe neglect and/or abuse to living creatures! Once again, we hear the “justifications” attempted in order to maintain the status quo - at these poor critters’ expense. That mentality makes me just as sick inside as the expose on HSUS. You are NO different; if you think you are? It’s called denial.
~OF COURSE, ANY living being - if ALL they know is a cage for their entire life (interpret = ABUSE!!! Hello, reality - Goodbye, denial.) then they will shake & be full of fear if introduced to anything new. OF COURSE. AND SO WOULD YOU IF KEPT IN A DAMN CAGE YOUR WHOLE LIFE. OMGosh, this stuff gets my all ready to explode. So many out there who lack in sensitivity & heart.
~Amen to those who allow their critters a QUALITY of life - FREE OF NEGLECT/ABUSE - whether farming or pets. NO EXCUSES for NOT allowing such to these blessed, thinking & feeling critters. PERIOD.
~I totally agree re it’s disgusting that our nations’ HSUS gives 1% to actual critters. It is criminal indeed. As is ANY person or group who neglects/abuses these blessed critters.
~It is also disgusting that the HSUS embraced a sick abuser like Michael Vick.
~Presently, I am reading “The Indictment of Wayne Pacelle”. <http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=6510>
~Keep up the good work “Humane Watch” - kudos to you all! Bravo!
~And God bless the critters & we who SINCERELY love them - w/not mere profession, but via our actions! ♥
To all the family farmers, do you know why you are only 1% of the population? You used to be everywhere, until the factory farms came along and they put you all out of business. You should be livid about that. Don’t you understand that if the HSUS is successful in getting laws passed to outlaw the most horrendous practices of animal treatment, like battery cages, gestation crates, veal crates, etc. that the playing field may eventually become more level again, and family farmers may have a chance to make a bit of a comeback? As more and more people learn of the abuse that occurs on factory farming, the more they will want options for humanely raised meat. That’s you! I mean, you don’t have to love The HSUS, but you should realize that, in a weird way, they may actually be doing you a favor. I mean, let’s be realistic here. Meat’s never going to be outlawed, despite what AR activists would like to see. Just like it’s impossible to outlaw alcohol and cigarettes, but they are regulated in such a way that makes things more manageable, so to speak. And, yes, I’m comparing meat to alcohol and cigarettes because in small amounts neither one of those things killed anyone, but in large amounts they make people very sick and be the cause of your death. Meat is very similar in that respect.
Kalor, believe me, gunk in the corner of a dog’s eyes is NOT a sign of worms. I have no idea where the person that said that, got that idea. It is a sign of many things, but not worms. Possibly hair getting in the eye, or entropion (inward growing eyelashes), an infection in the eye, etc. Every day I hear of new and strange things, but the gunk in the corners of the eyes meaning worms, is a new one on me, LOL. And I’ve worked in many areas of the dog business for over 40 years, including being a vet tech. At least I get a laugh out of these comments
Well, I caught the tail-end of a blurb on “House” that showed a doctor looking in an eyeball and a little thread like thingy moving around. Patient had been having vision problems and a bunch of other stuff. “House” shook his head and said something about the treatment and stomped off. I must have been on the phone because my memory of it isn’t very clear. Then a friend of mine has been diagnosed with this ugly little “thread” like parasite and I was wondering about such a symptom. I don’t know if that was what led her to the diagnoses or not. She has had other problems and I haven’t been able to talk to her for a while. In hosptial with poor phone system, etc. But I do have a lot of information on that and nowhere is anything mentioned about gunk in the eye - I never heard that one before either.
I’m pretty sure the worm in the eye is possible. Would that cause the eye to water? I dunno.
That worm in the eye was due to him being in another country. One of the more third world countries. I’m sure this person meant the normal worms that dogs get, such as ascarids (roundworms) and hookworms. And that is just not so.
Watering eyes in dogs is common in dogs such as poodles, bichons, and other breeds that have long hair, and if they aren’t kept groomed, the hairs go into the eyes. I saw it all the time when I was a dog groomer. A little ointment in the eyes, and it will usually clear up. I use Triple Antibiotic Ointment, even tho it’s not specifically for eyes (only due to not being advertised as such and not approved for it)and it works well. It has antibiotics in it which take care of any infection they have. It’s like Ivermectin isn’t labeled for use in dogs, but is used to prevent heartworm in dogs (it is also the ingredient in Heartguard). Internal or external parasites (demodectic mange, or sarcoptic mange among others) do not cause the dog to have worms. And tapeworm can only be gotten if a flea lays eggs on a dog, and it licks the area and swollows the eggs. They are not “catching” from one dog to another. Oh, BTW, I watch House too
And saw that particular episode you mentioned….
I dunno…...I think we have more of that in this country than is known. This video explains a lot.

But, there is more. There are documented cases of people who have had this for over 60 years. You just don’t get rid of it. Control it.
Some people have died from it while preparing for transplants. The immune suppressants just lets these guys go wild. Then, they have a bacteria that lives in their gut. You kill them and that bacteria leaves their gut and infects you. It can be pretty awful. I’ve been waiting to hear back from a friend who has this. A confirmed diagnosis, plus a whole lot of other health issues. Can’t treat one without affecting the other. Round and round.
Thx for the info…at least somebody knows enough to know I’m not totally insane. lol well maybe
Don’t most states (or is it federal??) have a truth in advertising statute? Wouldn’t it be prudent to contact your state representatives and insist they investigate HSUS ads in the state. They could also lobby for the repeal of its 501(C) status.
Surely there are enough of us to start a state by state movement on this.
It seems like it. But they do have a good many attorneys working for them and they could be connected in ways we don’t know about. I know the tv ads sys hsus and the lobbyests say they work for hsus but somewhere in there is another company that may be paying the lobbyests. hsus gives that company money and they pay the lobby crew…......?????I dunno, it just seems strange that they are so blatantly doing all of this. There has to be something we don’t know.
