Five Questions For Wayne Pacelle

For the benefit of anyone attending the HSUS "town hall" meeting in Lincoln, NE on Sunday night, here are five questions that someone should ask Wayne Pacelle.

We're not going to get the chance to do it, of course; but it really doesn't matter who does the asking, as long as the questions are asked.

  1. “In 1980 at HSUS’s annual meeting, the group made it official policy to – and I quote – ‘pursue on all fronts … the clear articulation and establishment of the rights of all animals … within the full range of American life and culture.’ Is this still HSUS’s goal? If you’re trying to give so-called ‘rights’ to cows, pigs, and chickens, why wouldn’t that completely destroy the entire livestock industry?”
  2. “Can you name a specific meat, dairy, or egg brand that you and the Humane Society of the United States have endorsed?”
  3. “If you got a federal law passed that demanded a nation-wide switch to the kind of livestock production mandated by California’s ‘Proposition 2’ law, would you and HSUS be satisfied with your achievement and completely dissolve the animal-agriculture part of your organization?”
  4. “Is there such a thing as meat that’s ‘humane’ enough that your ethics permit you personally to eat it? If so, where can we buy some? If not, what’s the difference between your group and PETA?”
  5. "In HSUS's Articles of Incorporation – its founding documents – you'll find the following declaration: 'No substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall consist of the carrying on of propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation.' Has that been changed since 1954? If not, what on earth have you been doing all these years? Isn't your job to propagandize and influence legislation? Isn't that what Prop. 2 in California and Prop. B in Missouri were all about?"

We recommend printing this list out and bringing it to the downtown Lincoln Holiday Inn on Sunday evening at 5:00. HSUS has reportedly received 150 RSVPs for this meeting, and many HumaneWatchers will be in attendance. There's no need to credit us (or even mention us) if you are permitted to ask one of these.

If none of these questions is heard during the three-hour event, it will be a good indication that the entire Q&A was scripted, or at least tightly controlled.

And no, we're not concerned about Wayne Pacelle seeing these five questions ahead of time. If he has good answers to any (or all) of them, he should share them with the audience. A nationally publicized "town hall" meeting seems like the perfect place to clear the air.

Maybe someone could ask if HSUS has any plans on sticking around after their legislation is passed and help in the funding of the implementation, enforcement costs, or unemployment?  Or do they just plan on leaving all of the cost to the taxpayers?

The only thing the HSUS is pushing across the nation is total control of animal use, and if they have to destroy our food supply and a few species to accomplish their mission that’s exactly what they will do.

Number 4 is exactly the question I planned on asking. Actually, I wanted to ask Paul Shapiro (of HSUS) that question almost two years ago when he had a teleconference with our class (Issues in Animal Agriculture), but after we started asking questions he didn’t really want to hear any more.

Every person I know in Nebraska who is involved wit animal rights are also members of HSUS. We all do have the ability to read and comprehend; therefore, we have read the HSUS website, been to HSUS conferences and know what is being said via the comments on this website are from people on the other side.

To whomever is moderating the comment site, I won’t be surprised if my comment doesn’t get posted—which then proves to me that I’ve made a point.

Lucys mom—1. You can not believe everything you read. 2. read between the lines. 3. actions speak louder than words. HSUS is not what it wants the public to think it is, and that is beginning to be shown to the unsuspecting people who are giving hard earned money to save those pathetic kitties and puppies that are so whined about on th tv ads. HSUS should also lose its non-profit status———-

@ LucysMom

You really didn’t say anything except you don’t really care about animals and don’t like people who do, did you?

I am always amazed at folks who still don’t know the difference between animal RIGHTS and animal WELFARE. Animal RIGHTS is an radical breaking of the human/animal bond that seeks to remove all animal usage from people, no animals for food, no animals for pets. No zoos, no aquariums, no horseback riding, no seeing-eye dogs.

The vast majority of people, once someone has explained the difference to them, discover they are actually supporters of animal WELFARE. Defined beautifully here:

Could someone please ask Mr. Pacelle what happened between 1990 (when he was listed in the newspaper as an animal rights activist) and today?  This was about the time he was stalking hunters and disrupting them, making news in Oregon.

He was described as an animal rights activist. I forget if he was working for Friends of Animals or PETA during this time. I thought that they believed in abolition of all animal use and it was considered a social movement of “just crazy people” and no one paid them much attention. So what made him change from a vegan animal rights activist to today—“animal protection” ...  and doesn’t that mean protection from human use or pleasure?

Was it something Peter Singer said?

Please ask him also when we all finally reach that utopian society, when people can fall off the earth as being destroyers of the earth, as long as the animals can stretch and flap their wings and be eaten by coyotes before nightfall, in a society where no more animals raised for food and eating meat is against the law and any “use of” dogs and cats for enjoyment and companionship (or seeing-eye dogs) is long gone, will HSUS be responsible for our supply of vitamin B-12 supplements in order to go vegan by law, or will it fall to our government to supply it?

No offense @ Lucysmom, but, well, duh. This website is designed to specifically tell the “other side”. It doesn’t take a biologist to figure that “what is being said via the comments on this website are from people on the other side
