Meet the 2.6 Million Dollar Man

Many of you, after looking at the evidence, agree with us that there’s a lot of room for improvement at the Humane Society of the United States. HSUS shares shockingly little of its donors’ money with pet shelters. It’s really more concerned with its own animal rights agenda.
HSUS doesn’t have many defenses for these facts. Instead of engaging in open discussion, they just attack their critics. HSUS calls critics defenders of animal abuse. And a favorite tactic of CEO Wayne Pacelle is to act as if opponents are just hacks of “industry”—essentially implying they’re only motivated by money. (The word “industry” turns up 466 times on Pacelle’s blog.)
It’s totally shameless, but that’s the kind of people in charge at HSUS. Where there’s no defense, they simply accuse opponents of profit-mongering. It’s an outrageous smear on animal lovers who simply want accountability and change.
Lately Pacelle has been complaining publicly about the way this blog’s parent organization is run. Unlike HSUS, we operate with remarkable efficiency by contracting out some of our more expensive day-to-day expenses to a management firm, essentially sharing costs with other organizations. Pacelle seems to think this means the people running HumaneWatch are capturing huge sums of money in the process.
This is nonsense. It’s a shame Pacelle, who makes more than a quarter-million dollars a year, doesn’t have a basic understanding of business economics.
Here’s the short course, Wayne: “Revenue” is not the same thing as “income.” Expenses like rent, advertising, web hosting, and human resources get deducted from revenue. And our organization has only about one-fortieth as much as yours.
The long course is a little more complicated, so we’re offering Pacelle his choice of two books, on us. He can choose either Managerial Economics and Business Strategy or the paperback version of The New Totally Awesome Business Book for Kids. The first book is available for the Kindle, but the second one has more pretty pictures.
We’re confident Pacelle already knows a thing or two about income, since he collects so much of it. We’re publishing some new data today that might make some of his employees wonder if the Big Boss is really worth the millions HSUS has paid him.
The HumaneWatch Document Library now contains every tax return HSUS has filed since Wayne Pacelle was hired in 1994. (They were all signed under penalty of perjury.) With three exceptions, these documents list Pacelle’s income and the value of his benefit package. Assuming his salary increases during those three “missing” years were steady (as opposed to sudden), Pacelle personally took more than $2.3 million out of HSUS through the end of 2009.

HSUS hasn’t filed its 2010 tax return yet. But assuming Pacelle didn’t take a pay cut last year, his personal take is now more than $2.6 million.
Will Pacelle’s total HSUS earnings top $3 million by the end of 2011? It’s quite possible.
The chart at left lists his compensation numbers for the last 17 years, including his $269,180 compensation package during 2009. The “starred” numbers in red are our low-ball estimates, based on the compensation totals that appear before and after.
Make no mistake: $2,636,197 is a lot of doggie-dollars. It's nice work if you can get it. And this doesn’t include the money Pacelle previously earned as Executive Director of The Fund For Animals—a group whose later merger with HSUS he engineered.
It seems clear that Wayne Pacelle is all about the Benjamins, and not so much about the Benjis. Under his leadership, HSUS has been socking $160 million away for future animal rights initiatives and recklessly playing the overseas markets. Meanwhile, hands-on pet shelters are left with table scraps—when HSUS isn’t charging them $25,000 a pop for “evaluations,” that is.
The next time Wayne Pacelle points a finger at his political opponents and claims they’re motivated by money, someone should remind him to check his own pay stub.

this is the same Wayne Pacelle who told Missouri dog breeders that $100,000 GROSS per year was “lots of money"a and that anyone with 50 breeding dogs should be able to live comfortably.. no deductions for food , shelter, utilities , medical etc /\.. and that is for the DOGS.. much less for the FAMILY..
Wayne is a hypocrite and a bully. he should be fired..
This is an outrage - and I will no longer donate one cent to the HSUS!!! From now on it will only to go no-kill animal shelters that really need it to care for the animals.
Look at the raises he got in 2003 and 2004. The first raise was nearly a 43 percent increase, the second one is 22.4 percent. If you look at the difference between his 2003 compensation and his 2005 compensation it’s an increase of nearly 75 percent!
It would be interesting to look at what was going in those years—Katrina, anyone?
We have been saying this for a year in our Dog Club that it’s High Time we as dog owners join together and help take care of our Problems. Which is why we have created the “PAW IT FORWARD” Campaign, which raises money to fund Adoption Events from High Kill Shelters to place dogs into their New Forever Homes.
100% of all funds collected goes directly to this effort and you can help by visiting us on the web at http://www.pawitforwardnow.org The Needy Dogs Thank You!
why is he still employed and why has his salary not been adjusted???????? Someone needs to look into this.
Anyone who’s been reading HumaneWatch for more than a few days will know that I am not an HSUS apologist or a Wayne Pacelle fan. But wasn’t 2004 his first year as president of HSUS? A $45,000 salary bump on becoming CEO of an organization with an annual $100 million-plus operating budget does not seem like a huge leap to me. Getting a pay increase in the 40-45% range two years in a row, however, does strike me as way beyond generous. I don’t know what other ostensibly non-profit organizations have annual budgets on this scale, or what their execs are paid, so I don’t have a point of comparison. OTOH, I know that Wayne also is paid for his services to Humane Society International and the Humane Society Legislative Fund. I don’t recall the figure, but one or the other of them pays him in excess of $100,000 for whatever it is he does for that subsidiary. I think the figure was actually in the $125-150,000 range. So in reality, his compensation is over 1/3 of a million dollars annually. That’s a million bucks every three years, not counting the value of the benefits and retirement contributions he receives.
And I am deeply saddened and disgusted to have to say that HSUS appears to be getting its money’s worth. We know what Wayne is, and his price for doing what he does seems to be in keeping with the havoc he wreaks on people engaged in lawful pursuits that involve the use of animals..
I always make sure i only donated to no kill shelters. it is the only was to go..otherwise you have this kind of problem
This is terrible…people are paying their hard earned money and trying to share what that can to help out the animals we love.
I hope he is found accountable for activities of monies that he spent and if needed get the IRS and maybe the F.B.I. because why should animal suffer because of his spendings. Animals have no voice except for mine right now and this man has taken food out of their mouth and also necessary medical needs and whatever else the Humane Society uses the funds for. Please do further investigation this man should not get away with this I don’t care how much money he has he thinks he untouchable.
Do you wonderful folks seriously think that this POS gives two sh*ts about what any one thinks??
NO he does NOT! He is only in it for the money. He does not even care about the animals i.e the Vick case. These two look like there in love(deny it… you cant without lying )So regretfully myself and my daughter can no longer donate to this organization until Pacell is gone, as far as I am concerned he can go live with Vick they deserve each other.
Dorothy
@ bestuvail how bout instead of firering him hang him ” in the courts”.
More people need to research the organizations that they donate money towards. Unfortunately, too many kind-hearted, animal loving individuals are still donating to HSUS assuming that their hard earned dollars are actually helping the animals. It is the huge HSUS deception!
I wrote a check for $100 to HSUS, but because of Pacelle’s pandering for his new book, I could not get myself to mail the check. I hate shelters that sit on million$ while the animals suffer, and I see HSUS sitting on millions while Pacelle gets richer. I am thankful for Humane Watch and their dogged determination to reform the HSUS back to its mission of helping animals not named Wayne Pacelle. I gave the $100 to a local shelter.
Also, if you contribute to human disease research, the biggest names use those donations to experiment on animals: Susan Konen Race for the Cure, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, MDA, March of Dimes, etc. To find which human disease organizations use your money to torture animals, go to http://www.humaneseal.org and http://www.pcrm.org.
If this surprises you, then please spread the word to your contacts. There are reputable organizations that are making great strides for each particular HUMAN illness you might want to support, but they do not have enough funding, as the big, well-known orgs are getting the money and wasting it. You can find them at humaneseal.org.
what a shame!! So what do we simple people do to change all this? Lets do it, lets change things
Hey All,
Evidently since my last comment was not posted evidently it was not fluffy enough. Whoever read it and chose not to post it, fine, still feel the same way!
Pacelle makes way to much money for doing NOTHING!! hope that was to the point. He should be REMOVED and someone of competence should take his place. Fluffy enough?
I dont know who took to money from animals rights I wondering how they look at the mirror themself or sleep at their bed?
I can do your job better and save thousands more pets than you could ever think about helping!!!!!!!!
Glad I read this. I give $20.00 a month and now i will stop this. Shame can’t trust anybody who wants donations. Thank you.
With all the negative imput reguarding wayne it’s the animals that will suffer because thats the reason money is donated in the first place! Shame on HSUS!! He needs to be fired and a private agencey should see were all the dollars are going to!
I find this extremely distressing when I am trying to find ways to fund my small horse sanctuary. People will donate to HSUS instead of locally, where they can see where their $ go. I have yet to draw a paycheck for my 6 years as exec. director!
Twice I wrote to Wayne Parcelle when the slaughterhouses for horses were being shut down. I asked him - what is the solution? Where are these animals to go??? No reply. Not even an acknowledgement of my email. Guess he’s too busy “earning” more money…
I have been a supported of HSUS for a long, long time but they will no longer get a penny of my money. I have actually seen on TV, the ASPCA at work during disasters and that is reassuring that at least some people still love and care for our animals. I always knew the “high-ups” got paid first but his salary is way OUT OF SIGHT and he probably doesn’t even care about our animals and the ones needing “forever homes”.
I am so mad ..... I use to donate to help the poor aniamls and this——- gets it .... well the good old Lord knows who is good or not .... People like this person does not care about the animals at all just the money that is going into his pocket .... what a shame it has made me not donate to anyone or to the animals that do not live in my city and what a big SHAME too .. for I love animals so very much.. My husband and I have taken in over 100 animals that people just threw away and raised them till the Lord called for them to return home and to think this person just takes takes…
This is the face of a huckster. His manipulation of well meaning contributors is shameless.
LOOOSER!!!!!
can we start up a campaign to get hsus to do something besides send stupid calendars to hustle for money? i used to send annual money to them but now i send it to my local shelters since i have read your blog. this is terrible & people need to know that this company & this ceo doesnt do anything for local shelters. the way they present themselves it fools people into thinking that your hard earned money goes to local shelters. what a scam!!
I’ve worked at some national nonprofits and the salary isn’t out of line. HOWEVER…I recently tried to do some work as a volunteer that involved staff at a high level in this organization and it quickly became clear how unskilled everyone I crossed path with truly was. What’s worse, my experiences made me question their dedication to the goals they say they pursue. They are unwilling to staff in a way that will allow them to achieve those goals, despite the fact that they are funded well enough to do so. And I was told that the pressure from the top is to engage new people in order to gather new email addresses - the opposite of the kind of volunteer work I was trying to do, but a tactic for increasing donations. What’s the point of raising so much money if an agency isn’t willing to spend it on reaching their their mission???? I’d do anything to get back the $$$ I’ve donated to them. Don’t just read and judge…go get involved with a group to find out who they truly are.
People should boycott donations until this man gets fired and all like him are removed from the Humane Society. Give to a legitimate local animal rescue and shelter. There are plenty of them in every state that will be grateful for your time and help, food, litter, or anything that you can give them. Unfortunately, it seems the bigger and more influential the organization, the more the chance for corruption.
Forwarding this to a friend who works for the IRS.. Not that they aren’t already investigating..
I have been supporting the HSUS for many years.’
NO MORE!
This is horrible! As an animal lover/volunteer (this guy probably NEVER volunteered a day in his life) he’s raising this money in the name of animals who desp. need our help & he pockets the money?! How does he sleep at night (probably on his 1000 thread count sheets) Isn’t there a way of getting him out of his position? Really, we Need to get the money to the right places~All the shelters who barely have enough for food/supplies needed on daily basis, etc! I’m just disgusted!
I will give the money i give to hsus every month to the local spca. I can see what they are doing with the money. I weep for the animals under your control. You are a disgrace to save an animal program. Why not explain your behavior to your kids see how they feel about you then.
IMHO, this man caters to celeb’s and gets them on his side and that’s how he stays in business. I will never support HSUS.
And this is why I am no longer supporting national organizations with money. I am only giving to local charities that I know how the money is being spent.
he should be fired, and afraid to face god
This is totally unacceptable and Pacelle must be stopped now. The proof is out there so why can’t we get rid of him. He’s self centered and cares nothing about the animals. He has no place in this position!
After years of giving to HSUS,I found out why piles of junk mail from all kinds of charities begging for money were bombarding me. HSUS was not satisfied with the years of donations I had given, so to make even more money from me, THEY SOLD MY NAME TO ANYONE WHO WOULD PAY FOR IT. I HAD TO CONTACT EACH CHARITY AND FIND OUT WHY AND HOW THEY GOT MY NAME AND INFO. OH,They said, from HSUS…It was like an identify theft process to eliminate myself and information from all of these various beggars.
How can we go about getting this man fired? I hate to stop donating money to the HSUS because that will take something away from these poor animals, but I would think that something can be done to have him fired. Maybe a petition could be started like an impeachment stating we want him out, and put someone honest in so these animals get the benefit of all those dollars that he is keeping.
I work at a local Hummane Society. We have on occasion purchased mailing lists from the HSUS to do local mailings. They insist that you cannot put anywhere in your literature that you recieve only local funds and nothing from a national group (them?) for your operations. They require this not just for the mailing to their purchased list but for all your mailings. Really?????? We do not recieve national money for our local humane society and it is soooo unethical for them to censor this information. I’ve never seen such a greedy animal rights organization.
Elizabeth, please understand that the entire organization is corrupt. Donate your money to the local humane societies and the help will go straight to the animals.
Well then, all these years I’ve been duped into believing I was doing some good by donating what funds I could. I have 2 cats that were abandoned, 2 I got from a family member, 1 dog that was literally hung in an attempt to destroy it after it reached the “not cute and cuddly puppy” stage, 1 dog from a family member and 2 that I intentionally sought out years ago. Most of my pets have been rescued or adopted over the years. So experience tells me there is a serious need out there for good shelters, good people to run them and good people to adopt these wonderful critters. Sadly I now know the HSUS is a sorry joke, one played on every one of us who has given in hopes of helping out those who can’t help themselves. I can’t post the expletives here, that are going through my mind but I know I can’t be the only one who is outraged.
Fear God Parcelle, if u ever read the Bible, u will know having all the money in the world wont help u when judgment time comes. Either clean up your act or resign dude. I will be giving to a local shelter.
Idiot!!
I think it’s important to question your initial premise: that the money that the HSUS receives in donations should go directly to shelters. Why? There are lots of other legitimate and very much needed ways for a non-profit organization to spend money to help animals besides giving directly to shelters. First and foremost, laws need to be changed on both a national and individual state levels. These detailed and multifaceted campaigns require well-trained lobbyists and TV and radio commercials, just to name two high-ticket items, to be successful. But the results of law changes are both broad and deep, and many times permanent. When you change the law, you also change the culture, and that, it seems to me, is what the HSUS is attempting to do. A great example is the civil rights law-the deep cultural changes that our country has been a part of since 1965 followed the enactment of that law, not the other way around, for the most part.
And lets not forget the law suits they bring and often win-it’s the same strategy that the NRDC uses to bring companies and the government into compliance with environmental laws or to overturn an unjust law-it’s another important and often-used strategy that helps to legitimately change our culture-the way we as a people think about an issue. And it can be expensive-so what? Look what they’re achieving!
The HSUS has a much broader agenda than just helping companion animals, and I applaud them for their tactical approach to accomplishing systematic change-their workers, including Mr. Pacelle, are smart, well educated and dedicated to improving the plight of ALL animals. What the heck is wrong with that?
And by the way, why not compare Mr. Pacelle’s salary of 2.6 million over 17 years with say, the many millions (like 15-20 million) that other CEO’s (banks, wall street and oil industry executives) receive in one year for cheating people and destroying the environment? Why isn’t it fair to let the board of the HSUS determine what salary is fair for him to receive-like all other for-profit and non-profit company boards do?
I hope he chokes to death on all of that money! How can you be involved in something like this and only care about yourself!! What is wrong with people on this world today? Your day of judgement will come one day and you will be begging for mercy like all of these poor innocent animals who just want to be loved!!! People like this don’t deserve a prayer or a second chance. May the devil be with you!
Sorry, Joan. Reading from the HSUS talking points doesn’t help Pacelle’s credibility at all. Anybody who has been near enough to an incident upon which HSUS decides to spend money knows how phony the whole deal is.
I only give to local shelters and to the ASPCA in my area.
shame shame on you, mr.pacelle! SHAME ON YOU,ALL YOU DO AND EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH
When are people going to realize money is the root of all evil! He is selfish!!!

Ummm… 260-plus thousand is just over a quarter of a million dollars, not 2.6 million dollars - what is making up the rest of his compensation (for the 2.4 you haven’t itemized)?
