New HumaneWatch Billboard Hits Times Square

New Yorkers (and tourists) visiting Times Square today will notice a new HumaneWatch billboard on Seventh Avenue, between 48th and 49th Streets.

Thanks to a certain celebrity collie for providing the inspiration for this successor to our February five-billboard installation. (If you missed that one in Times Square, you can view it here.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Watchdog Group’s Times Square Billboard Blasts Humane Society of the United States
HumaneWatch.org Warns HSUS Donors: A Tiny Fraction of Contributions Go To Pet Shelters

Washington, DC – Today HumaneWatch.org, a project of the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), unveiled a new billboard in New York’s Times Square criticizing the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) for its deceptive fundraising practices. Despite most Americans’ belief to the contrary, HSUS is not a national umbrella group that represents community-based humane societies, and it shares less than one percent of its income with underfunded pet shelters at the local level.

The billboard is located at Seventh Avenue, between 48th and 49th Streets. Its unveiling coincides with HSUS President Wayne Pacelle’s scheduled April 21 New York City appearance to promote his new book, The Bond. The HumaneWatch ad features a young boy shocked to hear from the family pet that HSUS gives less than one percent of its money to hands-on pet shelters.

“HSUS is an animal rights group that uses heart-wrenching images of dogs and cats to guilt the American public into donating. But it’s sharing less than one percent of the proceeds with the hands-on shelters that actually care for these animals,” said Rick Berman, CCF’s Executive Director. “HSUS’s millions support a huge staff of lawyers and lobbyists, bloated executive pension plans, exorbitant fundraising expenses, and bankroll an animal rights agenda that attacks modern farming.”

HSUS raised $97 million in 2009, mostly from Americans who thought their donations would filter down to local pet shelters. According to Opinion Research Corporation polling, 59 percent of Americans falsely believe HSUS “contributes most of its money to local organizations that care for dogs and cats.”

“The Humane Society of the United States is a humane society in name only,” continued Berman. “Americans can really make a difference to animals in their communities by donating and volunteering at their local shelters.”

The Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit watchdog organization that informs the public about the activities of tax-exempt activist groups. It is supported by American consumers, business organizations, and foundations.

MONEY WELL SPENT , Finally the truth ,Thanks for what you do ..

Impeccable timing HW! This makes me feel so good, I’ll also be sending an extra donation to my local shelter in your name.

Posted by Therese on 04/19 at 06:09 PM

Animals need to be fed and sheltered but laws and law enforcement is also part of their welfare. Hopefully this is where most of the donations go.  I don’t know what the % is but I’d like to hear their comments on the matter.

great job!! keep up the good work.

I love the billboard, please let me know how I can help your organization fight HSUS, this is the type of fighting I like.

HSUS uses millions of dollars in advertising to get more free donations that do not go towards the hands on care of animals.  They need to be held accountable for their actions.

THANK YOU for what you are doing!!!!

WONDERFUL!!! So many are fooled by this dreadful outfit.
Us in the business of saving animals seethe when we see their misleading ads.

HW you couldn’t picked a better time.

Posted by Regan H on 04/20 at 12:16 AM

So…if I donate to HSUS, less than 1% will reach the local Humane Society shelter?

I’m in Portland, OR. There is a place here called Humane Society of the Columbia Willamette. Isn’t that part of HSUS?

I’ve never thought HSUS shared funds with the smaller local rescues, but that it shared with its own locations.

Am I crazy?

Just a thought, why can’t some of this money spent go to your shelter of the week, where it is really needed. I understand that the public needs to be informed but with the large amount of money the CCF recieves you would think that maybe just $100 a week would be helpful and not take much from your cookie jar.

Posted by Justin on 04/20 at 08:40 AM

BRAVO—excellent job!  Let’s hope there are more put up around the country!

Posted by Rose on 04/20 at 08:58 AM

@ AED the h$u$ has nothing to do with local animal shelters. They are a political org. They push for laws that make it impossible to own animals, and to take meat off your table. They are against the farmers, dog breeders, hunting, fishing, trapping, the fur trade etc, etc. Don’t give money to them.

Posted by Regan H on 04/20 at 12:24 PM

@ Justin HumaneWatch does not take donations for shelters.
HW is here to educate people about the deceitful ways of h$u$ and how they use the money to work against the farmers and ranchers, pet owners also.

Posted by Regan H on 04/20 at 12:38 PM

Well done!  Thanks for getting the message out there before we find ourselves “in the well” and Lassie can’t help us.

Posted by Gerrie on 04/20 at 02:02 PM

Don’t forget to give (and get involved) local if you really want to help animals. See for yourself how the money gets used.

Oh, and the next time you enjoy a steak (or pork chop or chicken breast), remember to thank a farmer for all their hard work.

Posted by linn on 04/20 at 08:48 PM

Justin, the CCF and HumaneWatch don’t “receive a large amount of money.” They do what they can, and in fact, DID donate $100 a week to shelters selected by readers who submitted winning blog posts for several weeks last year.

The question you should REALLY be asking yourself is why doesn’t the H$U$, which has over $121 million in assets, and pulled in $97 million in donations in 2009, donate $100 a week to every shelter in the entire United States?

Posted by BADKarma on 04/20 at 08:52 PM

While I agree with most of the article, I also know that the HSUS is one of the few agencies that has actively gone after dog fighting rings in the past.  I don’t know of any other agency doing that.

Posted by Linda on 04/20 at 11:59 PM

How about another billboard that shows page 11 of the HSUS’ Form 990 (year 2009) and their One Hundred Forty MILLION DOLLAR investments in “publicly traded securites”.

How many animals could THAT money help?

And yet, the public CONTINUES to donate to HSUS, when they have MILLIONS of dollars in the bank.

P.S.  The $140,000,000.00 is in ADDITION to $25,000,000.00 in CASH.

Don’t beleive me?

HSUS’ form 990 is posted on their website.  Take a look for yourself.

***THANK YOU**** to Humane Watch for educating the public on how HSUS is ripping them off.

Posted by Jim on 04/21 at 08:37 AM

@ Heidi - Sadly H$U$ never actually answers questions directly or honestly when it comes to how they spend the donations received under deceitful practices pretending they care for shelter companion animals.  They will only attack HumaneWatch.org as being funded by big business and never address the FACTS that HumaneWatch carefully collects from other sources - such as the actual H$U$ tax return.  If you manage to get a straight answer from H$U$, please, please do share it with the HumaneWatch followers.  It would be rare indeed.

Posted by Kathy on 04/21 at 07:57 PM

Individuals that want to donate, they should use the local animal shelters in their community, cities and their shelters in their state.

Posted by Steve on 04/22 at 06:43 AM

Wow, who would have guessed this “humane” society was such a scam. Now we need their address, the names of their governing board, their annual report and the list of organizations that receive OUR money from THEM.

Put this information here NOW.

Until specific PEOPLE are held accountable and put up for public scrutiny very little will change once that sign is taken down.

These orgs have REAL people making REAL decisions. Let’s see their names and addresses here!

Posted by Porta Coelhi on 04/22 at 09:22 AM

Amen, Steve!  Local shelters are under more pressure than ever and a sack of dog food or a few dollars are always appreciated.  H$US care about donations and have/will do whatever it takes to keep the river flowing.

Posted by Karen on 04/22 at 03:14 PM

Linda, that is not even slightly true, unless you believe the propaganda produced by the H$U$.

According to the H$U$, they are the sole bastion of moral opposition to dog-fighting in a sea of evil, corrupt, paid-off public officials in every state in the U.S.

Not only is this a complete lie, it is a grotesque slap in the face to every single local humane society, law-enforcement agency, and animal welfare group in the country which is actively involved in combating dog-fighting.

This is particularly true in Philadelphia, where the H$U$‘s loving embrace of convicted sociopath animal murderer Michael Vick has resulted in an exponential increase in dog-fighting busts since 2009.

Since you seem to think the H$U$ is so terribly concerned about dog-fighting, please, Linda, tell us all… What exactly has the H$U$ done about the situation in Philly, besides deny Michael “I never met a dog I didn’t want to torture to death” Vick’s presence has anything to do with it?

Posted by BADKarma on 04/22 at 08:54 PM

thanks for the info.  everybody needs to know this, its too bad that greed even is in the animal shelter thank COULD do a lot of good.  thanks for all you guys do.

Posted by jeanne on 04/22 at 09:11 PM

Thanks, so much for speaking the truth. They really don’t care about animals. It is just the money they are worried about. The more they make us look bad, the more money they receive. We are in desperate need for help. The HSUS is shutting down farms and kennels. They come in and steal our animals claiming we are mistreating them. Why would someone think we don’t feed our animal and abuse them. Of course we do everything we can to keep our animals healthy or we would not make any profit. The better care we give them, the better they take care of us.

Another victim of the HSUS’s lack of committing help are the wild horses and burros of America. They are wrongfully evicted from their federally protected habitat for the propaganda of BLM who cashes in on subsidized ranching, mining and special interests. The horrific cruelty of these round ups and the languishing of horses in holding have been documented and sent to HSUS. Yet, nothing is done on their part to help stop or expose this. They have the means to do so, yet supply the PZP drugs to sterilize the horses, and do nothing to protect them from this outrageous abuse of BLM and their contractors: Watch this and find out the truth of wild horses disappearing in the West !!

All HSUS has to say is, thanks for your email !!!

This is actually no secret… but the billboard is great… let the truth be known to even MORE people. Nathan Winograd has pointed out for years that the big, national organizations do very little to actually help animals. Imagine if that 97 million were shared among local shelters and rescue groups? Our 32-year old no-kill cat shelter would only need a small portion of that money to go really big and help even MORE cats! Far be it for any of that money to go to those of us actually in the trenches every day, pulling cats and kittens out of ditches and trailer parks, hustling our way through vet appointments, trying to find even the slightest price break so that we can help the greatest number of animals… while the big wigs and lawyers and so-called advocates can keep their $50,000+ a year salaries… while most of us doing the real work as volunteers. How many corporate HSUS employees would do the same work for nothing, I wonder? Best thing is to keep donating to local shelters whose work you can see in front of you… if you have an injured cat on your porch, who you gonna’ call? HSUS, or your local shelter? Better yet, who is going to respond?

Posted by Connie on 04/23 at 06:21 PM

Anybody can call themselves the Humane Society of wherever. There is no link between your local Humane Society and HSUS at all.

Posted by NN on 04/23 at 06:26 PM

@AED

I am from Oregon as well and I donate to the Oregon Humane Society where over 95% of the funds received actually go to giving care to dogs, cats and other critters (they had a bunch of rats there when I visited the facility last year).  I would call HS of C-W to find out how they use their funds or ask to see their facility.  That is the best way to determine how your funds are being used.

Posted by Kathryn on 04/25 at 01:39 PM

Monika, I live in Nevada and worked for BLM for several years.  What you are saying about the wild horses is no more “the truth” than what HSUS spews out.  The round ups are conducted in as low stress a manner as can be done.  They are not chased by helicopters, in fact, the helicopter does not put any pressure on the horses (who are being led by a trained “lead horse” so they go in the right direction - i.e. no running around in circles or panicked) until they are very close to the mouth of the pens.  And trust me, there is no “cash in” from ranchers, as you claim.  Cattle and other livestock are MANAGED and ranchers are not allowed but a certain number of animals, and if they go over that, they are fined.  Conversely BLM is not following their own management plan for horses, so are holding livestock producers to a different standard than they hold themselves.  BLM’s legal mandate is MULTIPLE USE management…they can no more manage for a single use like horse any more than they can manage for mining or anything else…they MUST manage for it all.  Right now, the horses are over populated and degrading the rangeland (which are not that productive here in Nevada (we average less than 6 inches of rain in most places here, so you figure it out) for OTHER WILDLIFE.  That is the concern of the people, like me who live here and actually see what is happening to our NATIVE wildlife.

I agree HSUS holding the patent on the PZP is disgusting and is influencing their position on how to manage the herds.  They stand to make $500/sterilized mare, so of course they are big proponents of catch, sterilize and release.

I love the juxtaposition between the Conan billboard and the HW billboard.

It makes Conan look surprised too. :]
