Press Release: NYT Ad Slams HSUS Prez for Saying Michael Vick Should Be Permitted to Have More Dogs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York Times Ad Slams HSUS President for Saying Michael Vick Should Be Permitted to Have More Dogs
Full-Page Ad from HumaneWatch.org Urges Humane Society of the U.S. Donors to Call 866-720-2676, Cancel Financial Pledges
Washington, DC – A full-page ad from HumaneWatch.org, a watchdog project of the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), appears in today's Sunday New York Times, criticizing the recent claim of Wayne Pacelle, the President of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), that convicted dog abuser Michael Vick “would do a good job as a pet owner.” The ad condemns HSUS for supporting the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback’s ownership of dogs, and urges all recurring HSUS donors to cancel their memberships and stop giving to the organization. The ad will run this Sunday as the Eagles suit up against the Giants in the Meadowlands.
HumaneWatch.org points to the Eagles’ $50,000 donation to HSUS in 2010 as one possible motivation for Pacelle’s indefensible suggestion that Vick should be allowed to own more dogs. Despite the words “humane society” in its name, HSUS is not affiliated with local humane societies anywhere in America. It spends tens of millions every year supporting a staff of more than 700, lobbyists in all 50 states, and an $11 million executive pension plan. Yet during the past two years, HSUS shared less than 1 percent of its money with hands-on pet shelters.
“It’s absolutely shocking that the leader of America’s biggest animal rights group would side with a convicted dog fighting felon instead of with helpless pets,” said David Martosko, CCF’s Director of Research and the editor of HumaneWatch.org.
Within 24 hours of Michael Vick’s arrest for running a Virginia dog fighting ring, HSUS began raising money online to “care for the dogs seized” at Vick’s home. Wayne Pacelle later admitted to The New York Times that HSUS was not caring for the dogs. Pacelle also recommended that officials “put down” (kill) the animals. Despite HSUS’s wishes, most of those dogs have since been successfully rehabilitated.

Not a fan of Vick or Pacelle or HSUS to say the least; in fact what I would have to say about any of the above should not be “printed” here.
However why would humanewatch.org really have a problem with MV getting a family pooch?
Pacelle says MV should be allowed to have a dog because he is a money-grubbing hypocrite.
But evil that doesn’t mean wrong all the time.
Does HumaneWatch—an organization that has thus far to my knowledge been a pretty good voice of reason against PETA-style AR insanity— really want to say MV should NOT own a dog, blah blah just because Pacelle said he should?
OMG, you guys ROCK!!!!!!!!!! This made my whole weekend! Totally awesome work!
You should have been more blunt in stating that the best way to help animals is to donate directly to the local shelter.
Knowing this information is out there will make me smile all day. Thank you for getting the truth out there.
NOOOOOO way in hell should that man be allowed to have a dog! He’s responsible for tons of dog deaths, and hes a good example why pit bulls have a bad name. NO WAY SHOULD HE EVER BE ABLE TO HAVE A DOG! HIS ASS BELONGS IN JAIL STILL, HOW MANY DOGS DIED BECAUSE OF HIM??? HE SHOULD STILL BE IN JAIL
The NYT ad was done in poor taste. Michael Vick has served time and appears to be sincerely sorry. I love animals as much as I love forgiveness.
he shouldnt own dogs for life ! i saw this on the news the other day i dont agree when he said “i changed”
abusers dont change they adapt to being sneakier & deadlier ! once an abuser always abuser
i think more towns more states need to do this, it is the nation’s first animal abuse registry was approved in Suffolk County Ny and Those convicted of animal abuse charges would be required to be on the registry for five years or more.
I’m sorry SCUM BAG, for all those Pit Bulls you killed by torture, electrocution, drowning, FIGHTING, the rape traps for the females, using SWEET dogs as BAIT then killing them because they wouldn’t make YOU any money! Slamming them into the ground at times to kill them. Sorry buddy, you may think your pulling the wo…ol over others eyes, but not mine. You are a ZERO. Only reason you are sorry is because you got caught.
The ONLY reason that team and Mr Pacelle, did and said that is because they don’t want people hating the Eagles because Vick is on that team. I am GLAD they sent a check out, they should also send a check out to Tia Marie Torres, founder of Villalobos Rescue Center. She has 200 Pit Bulls that need a home. It costs her apx $800 a day to care for these dogs.
Michael Vick is sincerely sorry… sincerely sorry he got caught.
P.S. I don’t begrudge him earning a living either. Owning a dog - no, not now, now ever.
Now thats cool, that ad ought to increase the humaneWatcher’s list of readers’ and back the hsus up a few steps.Of course they already got 50,000 so not a toltal lost.
@ Victoria…
Not sure you understood the intent of the ad? It really has a lot more to do with pointing out to the general public that anyone with a BIG checkbook can BUY “forgiveness” from Wayne Pacelle and HSUS. And if you think for a moment that the $50,000 from the Eagles is going to help animals in any way, shape or form, then you should do a little research on what HSUS does with the boatloads of donor cash they receive. Gold plated pensions for Wayne and ilk are at the top of the list while those cute puppies and kittens in the HSUS ads are left to die or euthanized for convenience….
Convicted animal abusers usually are prohibited from ownership for life. MV should be treated no less.
@ Robin I know hsus will use the money for something else, not to help animals. But that ad will wake a lot of people up to hsus’s abuse to their donations and learn about humanewatch’s website and may become every day readers, and supporters.
If it were not for his money, Best Friends would not be bowing down to Vick and harboring his vicious dogs instead of using the space for needy, adoptable dogs. Vick should never be allowed to own a live animal of any kind and the HSUS know this. As a retired humane officer for the State of California I KNOW that the HSUS, BF, ASPCA, and every single legit rescue know this to be true and only greed and money will ever change that. Best Friends has always been able to be bought ever since they started getting huge donations and estates willed to them. The HSUS has started behaving the same way. Their actions are at the expense of animals everywhere if any of these organizations allow Vick to own a dog..regardless of the amount of money that is donated to them. Vick should be in jail and is a worthless piece of human flesh that is paid to play football. He should not be walking free among us…again money/greed is overriding human decency, morals, and threatens animals by just the fact some moron would even suggest that Vick could ever own or be around an animal. The world would be so much better without tis phony moron.
The HSUS has long ago become a phony organization that can be bought at the expense of innocent animals. If you know anyone that is still ignorant enough to make huge donations or will their estates to this greedy place, please stop them. Of course, any rational human being knows that the monster Vick who’s money has allowed him to stay out of jail and continue to play football…should never own a dog or be around one. The HSUS has become a place that will cause the rescue of a ew hundred animals when notified, take one of them (right now a puppy) use it for their pat on the back advertisement. Meanwhile they have dumped all of the other rescued animals on smaller rescues and have not given them a dime to vet or take care of them. However the HSUS is totally through with them and the morons just keep giving them money for the issue at hand. See current ads involving one puppy from a rescue. Ask them where the others are!!! I hope this irresponsible statement made from the president of the HSUS wakes up the millions who donate to this now totally inhumane organization and change their wills. I have been an animal advocate all of my life and have rescued hundreds of animals myself. I am a known animal lover and am constantly fighting for those that cannot speak for themselves. I would NEVER say anything against the HSUS if it were not true. Check out the truth!!!! Vick is scum and it is totally irresponsible to even suggest that e own an animal when he should not even be walking our streets!!! The HSUS can be bought and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Check into every rescue in the past five years and see for yourself where the oney has gone..not to the animsl. Stop throwing away your money giving it to them and support your local and smaller shelters who try to do as much as they can for needy animsl on a shoestring budget.
call the number.. you will get a whiny message from wayne with a big mea culpa.. yada yada yada
oh and he does not miss the chance to trash this group..
Well, considering that the head of the HSUS has spoken of eliminating dogs and cats as pets completely, perhaps he’s thinking Vick can help by killing all the dogs off. I used to think the HSUS was honestly HELPING homeless animals. Then I got actively involved in animal rescue work myself and the truth has been nothing less than shocking. HSUS brings in the big bucks and makes sure to get involved in high-profile cases, like hoarding, but the truth is that with all the money they receive yearly, they do little to directly help the millions of animals dying in shelters every year. Look at their financial records - they have more money than they know what to do with. But, instead of using it to start free spay/neuter programs in areas with the highest kill rates in shelters, they do things like supporting an dog-killing monster like Michael Vick.
Check out the laws regarding the rights of convicted criminals for owning dogs. Many who have done FAR less than Vick will never be able to own one. Why, then, should Vick? He may put on a good front, but in truth anyone who can so horrendously murder that many dogs simply cannot turn around and one day become a loving guardian for a dog.
Funny how the fact that there is proof of a direct link between animal abuse and child abuse has been ignored. I fear for Vick’s children, too!
I pray Michael Vick never, never, never, owns another dog, cat, bird, any animals.
When I saw what He did and then some of the rehabilitation of those precious dogs, and HE wants another. OH NO I don’t think so.
thank you
THANK GOD some or all could be rehabilitated.

I wish I knew someone who pledged so I can call HSUS on their behalf and cancel for them. I’d LOVE to hear what tactics their Phonettes will employ to attempt to salvage this blessed donor exodus…...
“Wayne didn’t mean what he said”.......
“You misunderstood Wayne’s intent”........
“The HSUS is about more than Wayne…..”
“We’re giving away Eagles season tickets to the first 10 donors who stay on…....”
I can only imagine…...
Please, if anyone finds out, post it here!
Dear Humane Watch, Thank you for such a great NYT ad for my Xmas gift…...
