Show Me HumaneWatch!
If you missed the Missouri State Fair this year, then you missed HumaneWatch. No, we weren’t actually there—but some crafty agriculture advocates and other animal lovers made sure fairgoers thought twice about associating the Humane Society of the United States with pet shelters.
One group made hundreds (perhaps thousands, according to one witness) of mini hand fans out of one of our ads, and handed them out at Saturday’s concert featuring HSUS spokes-strummer Sheryl Crow.
And the Missouri Pork Association’s promotional booth wasn’t just about pigs this year. It also featured the dogs on our ads, blown up to poster-size.
Reminder: All the HumaneWatch ads and handouts are available free for anyone to download and print. We have bundles of bumper stickers available at cut-rate prices. (Just e-mail for details.) And if anyone out there wants super-high-resolution PDFs for poster printing, just let us know.
Got a comment? Be sure to leave your thoughts below. From August 23 to October 29, 2010 we will be choosing the two best comments each week of 25 words or more, and awarding $100 (each) to the local pet shelters of the commenters' choice. Click here for more information and the official rules.

When God created man He created animals before He even thought of Eve…...and dogs have proven to be our best friends after all…LOL
I go to the Delaware County Shelter (Ohio) a lot! I always visit the cat room to love & give attention to all of the cats there & they always return the love & attention! It’s one big room where all of the cats are living together, all except the babies that just come into the shelter! The Delaware Humane Society keeps the inside of their building very clean & their cat room is well-maintained! It is a pleasure to go to & visit all of the animals there! I did take one of the kittens home & he is a great addition to our 2 Shelties & our 1 other cat! They all made friends quickly! We love to see them play with each other! My mother-in-law has 2 cats from that facility & she loves them with all of her heart, & they love her back, as well! If I could, I’d take all of the cats & dogs there home, but that’s impossible, sad to say! I wish more people would come into this shelter & claim more of the animals there! I know these cats & dogs feel the same way! Please Mom’s & Dad’s take home these kids to be a part of your family now! This is my hope/prayers for them all! We love you, all of you!!
I have been promoting HumaneWatch at any event where I expect to meet people who love their animals, but aren’t likely to know about the agenda the HSUS supports (the elimination of ALL human/animal relationships, including our pets). This fair display is a great idea. I hang a HumaneWatch poster on my grooming table at dog shows, and even on my mobility scooter.
Reading the discussion forums in my local paper is starting to give me hope. Before, I was the only one telling people what HSUS was REALLY doing with their money. Now I’m not alone. We have a LONG way to go to expose the wolf in sheep’s clothing, but we ARE making a difference. Thanks HumaneWatch and HumaneWatchers!
Our job will never be done until we find each and every dog and cat a forever home. We also need the end to the cruelty and abuse a lot of these loving pets have endured. We need to be more vigilant in the spay/neuter of most animals, and also the need for severe jail & fines for the vicious people who do harm to our loving pets.
I just want the local humane society to get another hundred dollars. Anything to help animals.
I was at the Missouri State Fair and was impressed with all the vendors with the posters in their booth. I am hoping that people started wondering why the posters were everywhere and stopped to ask the vendors about it and maybe, got the message out to someone that isn’t aware. Way to go Agriculture building vendors!!!
What you doing is wonderful! I have 2 dogs and a ferret I adopted. I also donate monthly through ACH debit to ASPCA. Keep up the great work you’re doing!
Elizabeth, did you know that if you give the Humane Society of the United States $100, all that will actually buy for a real, live animal is a low quality can of cat food? Out of that $100, only 50 cents will actually help animals, and not very likely any in your community. If you take that same $100 and give it to a shelter or rescue in your community, ALL of it will directly benefit an animal with food, vet care, medications, and a place to stay.
The HSUS does not run a single shelter. It primarily exists to make more money, pay salaries and pensions, and to advance its own agenda of no animal/human relationships of ANY kind, including the elimination of your PETS! A much better idea is to open your phone book, go to “Animal shelters” and choose one near you to give to. Another suggestion is to go to petfinder.com, enter your zip code, and do a search for organizations in your area.
Any local group will use your donation more wisely and for its intended purpose…to actually feed, vet and shelter a REAL animal.
We’ve always known HSUS is watching this site….funny how the following story showed up on agriculture news wires this morning, huh?
“Pork Producers’ Intent Under Question”
The director of the Factory Farming Campaign for the Humane Society of the United States is questioning why the pork industry in Missouri is challenging the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act being considered in that state. Paul Shapiro believes – members of the agricultural community should ask what type of leadership they have in their industry that would choose to expend their resources and their reputation on such a battle.
HSUS is part of a coalition that gathered more than 190-thousand signatures of registered Missouri voters to place an anti-puppy mill measure on the November 2010 statewide ballot that would require anyone who has more than 10 breeding dogs to meet certain standards for housing, food and veterinary care. Owners would be limited to no more than 50 breeding dogs.
Shapiro says - it’s a real shame the opposition to a measure intended to protect puppies and dogs is being led by the pork producers in the state. He says - agribusiness interests seem intent on opposing any animal welfare initiative regardless of how unrelated to agriculture it is.
Keep up the great work Humanewatch! You’re keeping their attention!
If you love your animals, the best thing you can do for them is have them spayed or neutered, by doing this to your pets, you are providing a home for another pet somewhere, and you don’t have to worry about where and who those new born animals may end up. Please spay and neuter. Save a pet.
Shari- Unless you live in New York City, your donations aren’t helping your local shelter. The ASPCA is a New York City only organization. If you want to help animals in YOUR neighborhood, donate locally.
There is nothing better than having an animal. They are unconditional loving and better than any human being on this earth… Dog, god… One and the same. If you don’t treat animals fairly what makes you so sure that you will be treated fairly? After all there is an after life…and you will be judged accordingly.
I love dogs, but I don’t think any of them are God. And it makes me wonder what kind of human being you are that you think dogs are better than yourself.
I would love to have the “All-American Mutt Rescue” get a nod of attention. They are a wonderful organization that takes in every dog that comes their way in the countryside of southwestern Virginia. Often, they hold wonderful fund-raisers and adoption days.
They find great homes for the animals and most of all, they really care. They don’t have a lot of money and they started out like a little “mom & pop” shelter. It is located right on their property of 45 acres. As everyone knows; in this country animals are considered “property” and not family members. Not to these people.
Awesome! Kudos to whoever thought of advertising on fans! I know that that’s the one thing everyone has as they walk around the state fair grounds in the hot summer. Signs can be overlooked, but everyone needs a fan! And what better fan than one that spreads the HumaneWatch word?
I am with a small “mom and pop” dog rescue located in rural Indiana. We have adoption events, fundraising events and we go to lots of animal related events. Maybe we should put some of the donation vests on our dogs and put the flyers on them then have everyone walk around the events with their dogs wearing the flyers. That way they can informally speak for themselves!
My local shelter is the BEST!! They have the nicest people working there and they truly care about the animals that come through their doors. They are in desperate need of funding to continue to provide humane services. I have personally adopted three dogs from them and they were all in good health and were taken care of excellently. The people there answer all your questions and address all your concerns. It just reminds us all that even with a little funding ($100) it can and DOES go along way to help feed, shelter and care for our beloved four legged friends.
Great call on the fans during the Crow concert! Very nice touch.
I do have to make the comment though to those that say that spaying/neutering your animals saves other animals and that people that breed dogs sign the death warrant for shelter dogs. You are simply to playing right into the hands of animal extremists.
Responsible dog breeders do not have dogs that end up in shelters. They take back and rehome their own homebred dogs if something happens. They spend money to drive miles to get back dogs so they don’t end up in shelters. They spend thousands of dollars on older dogs that people just abandon in their later years so they can help them leave the world as loved as they came into in their homes..
They do rescue to save dogs of their own breeds..dogs they didn’t breed. Dogs that came from puppy mills.. dogs that were dumped on the streets or taken to shelters without contacting the original breeders.. They care..
They rescue dogs that are their breed, and mixes of their breeds, from kill shelters and they help these dogs without any assistance .
They rescue these dogs form kill shelters that wouldn’t have to be kill shelters if the HSUS took some of their hundreds of thousands of dollars they spend on trying to eliminate the breeders that are on the side of the DOGS and spent them on helping shelters instead…
I work with local rescue groups. I run a herding dog rescue list. And I’m a sheltie breeder.
A round of applause for Missouri for educating the public! My shelter does a lot of work. I volunteer there from time to time. Lolly pop rules. I got my dogs from there as well!
Animals are just angels here on Earth to help us humans get through what we have to until we all (humans and animals) can go to a place of peace and serenity. Animals are the innocents in all this and we need to guard them and keep them safe until that time comes.
WOW! I just can’t get over these good comments. Keep ‘em coming. “Down with HSUS!”
