The Smiling Face of HSUS’s New Chief Factory Fundraiser

If nothing else, this is confirmation that HSUS doesn't have 11 million supporters (at least not all in the same year).

We think it's safe to assume that "more than one million active donors" means somewhere between 1.0 million and 1.1 million. (Otherwise, they would have said "more than 1.1 million.) While this is the biggest real number we've seen, it's still less than one-tenth of the number HSUS throws around to boost its political clout.

Where’s the smile on the “smiling face”?

there is a difference between members (who give a specific amount in a year that qualifies them as a ‘member’) and supporters, who may give less, may give less frequently than every 12 months, may support the organization in other ways, etc. This is true for any non-profit. Have you ever seen anything from hsus claiming 11 million members or even donors? I don’t think so.

White liars. The truth comes out a little at a time. Slips off your tongue like turpentine.

@dogmom—they could also include people who gave 20 years ago and have since died.

And actually, yes, HSUS did claim 10, and then 11 million members. When we started pointing out the dishonesty in this, the organization adopted its current “supporters” / “constituents” language.

dogmom says: “Have you ever seen anything from hsus claiming 11 million members or even donors?”

Just my own ears, in my state legislature - where the HSUS rep claimed an outrageous number of members - well, actually, she said HSUS “represented” some 200,000 in my state. It doesn’t really matter, because no one was checking on these statements, or defining the word “member”, or challenging the numbers at all, frankly, until HumaneWatch came along. Thank You, HW!

The purpose of inflating membership numbers, or supporters, or constituents, is obvious. Our lawmakers hear those numbers and think “votes” - ‘nuff said.  Too bad that no one was able to stand up and holler “objection!” in that hearing when that outrageous number was thrown out there by HSUS.

Agriculture and Tourism are primary parts or our state’s economy. There are more than 600,000 hunting licenses issued every year, in a state with a population just under 6 million . . . well you do the math.

Who knows, maybe even I am considered a “member” because I subscribe to the HSUS e-newsletter? If that is the case, I will be contacting them to ‘unsubscribe’ immediately. I like to know what they are up to, but I don’t need that newsletter anymore, thanks to HumaneWatch.org.  Thank You again, HW!

Just another high paid staff on the pay roll and that much less for what they say they represent

@dogmom:  I’ve heard HSUS employees state many times, in many state legislatures, that they indeed do have “11 million MEMBERS or one in thirty Americans are members.”  It’s in the public record of testimony.

Clearly you have never given testimony against these bastards.

Ms Peeples wrote an article in 2001 and the title is:

Major Donors Are Not Born—They’re Bred

I’m not making this up! What irony!

dogmom I’ve heard HSUS claim 11,000,000 member before congress more than once in the last twelve months. I’ve also heard HSUS claim 1.3 members in California alone before the Fish and Game Commission.

I’m curious to see the latest tax return from the HSUS.  Where is the latest copy of Form 990 for 2009?  Given the myriad of ways we are seeing the HSUS desperately solicit funds from any and all sources, I wonder if there are money issues cropping up at HSUS headquarters that is jeopardizing their contributions to their pension funds!

Good catch, Alice!
