This One’s For All the Ladies Out There…
UPDATE: Mary Kay issued a statement clarifying that they never gave permission for HSUS to suggest they were sponsoring this fundraiser. Their logo has been yanked from HSUS's fundraiser web page.
If you have $200 burning a hole in your pocket and you live in the Dallas area, you too can fork over your money to HSUS's "puppy mill" program on March 26. That's when the HSUS "Spotlight Humane" gala will gobble up donor dollars like a politician in October. The only thing missing will be the rubber chicken. (An online schedule of HSUS events is helpfully provided by Tradeshow Multimedia, Inc.)
Events like this don't just happen by themselves. Someone has to advertise the tickets, rent a hall, pay a dance band, and hire a bouncer to keep the fur-wearing riff raff out. And that takes sponsorship money.
Here are the corporate sponsors for this little HSUS soiree:
That last one's a doozy, considering that this landmark restaurant's specialties include "fresh fish and seafood, flown in daily, [and] prime beef from the Midwest." I wonder if anyone from HSUS did a tasting. Probably not.
But the real surprise for me was Mary Kay. I have to believe that it's not too late for that fine cosmetics company to "walk this back." What do you think?
p.s. HSUS has nuked its generic online list of corporate supporters. I wonder why?
Comments
I just spoke with a representative at Mary Kay who denies they are sponsoring this event.
They will be forwarding my inquiry up the food chain there and returning the call soon—since I need a confirmation for an article I’m writing anyway.
Will inform you all as soon as I have a response from The Powers That Be at MK, and let you know if you should be joining me in packing up our product and shipping it back.

Interesting, isn’t it, when this was first announced it was Arthur Benjamin (new to the AR world) to HONOR Whiney Wayne and his puppy mill busting sidekick….who’s picture appears to be up but we hear he’s not THERE any more…..Scotlund Haisley!! hmm?
I am a Mary Kay consultant and hugely opposed to HSUS. I along with my director are both involved in agriculture and have fought against HSUS last year when they tried to oppose a livestock and food board. I am also in contact with corporate and will be voicing my many concerns to their supposed support of this event.
Please call corporate and talk to them about your concerns - Mary Kay corporate will listen and address this if enough people show concern. I am willing to bet that this is another case of people who didn’t educate themselves before they made contributions.
I am a Mary Kay consultant and an agriculture journalist. I am deeply concerned about this and I’ve let the Mary Kay corporation know my position against HSUS and their alleged donation to this event. I too will be packing up my product and discontinuing my association with MK if this is true—no matter how great their products are—because I care more about our nation’s farm families and the food security of America. HSUS is on a path of destruction for both and I do not want my activities as an MK beauty consultant to in anyway profit the HSUS with my hard earned dollars
I just contacted Wolfgang Puck Catering in Dallas-let’s see if I get a response.
I not sure if people realize where their money is going when they support events like this one. I checked into Mary Kay Sponsorship, and they deny affiliation. Money that is given to this organization not only helps things like the gala, but is used to attack agriculture (farmers and ranchers) way of life and job security. I’m not sure how the HSUS suggests cruelty equals profit. How can a person make a living if they harm livestock, damage the land, and abuse nature? I for one know that my farm would not exist with out me nurturing mother nature. If the HSUS continue with their mission, people will be bare foot, naked, hungry, and shelterless. I wonder then if they will see the big picture?
Humane Society Concerns
Some fans of Mary Kay® products and independent beauty consultants have expressed concerns over a recent sponsorship of a Dallas-area event. Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. We have heard you and want to clarify any confusion.
First and foremost, Mary Kay is not a sponsor of this event. Mary Kay’s owner’s wife was approached to make a personal contribution towards a local event here in Dallas sponsored by the Dallas chapter of the Humane Society. This event specifically supports efforts to stop puppy mills and the organization’s stop puppy mills campaign. Out of caring and compassion for addressing puppy mills, our owner’s wife agreed to make a personal contribution. Mary Kay has contacted the Humane Society to clarify that we are not sponsors of this event and the company logo is being removed from the website.
As a company, we sincerely apologize for any confusion or causing any offense to members of the Mary Kay community.
*Posted on Mary Kay official Facebook page / please adjust your claims.
Thanks!
HSUS has now removed Mary Kay from the list of sponsors from their Dallas gala page. Woo hoo!
As a Mary Kay Sales Director, I personally spoke with Mary Kay Corp, today and MARY KAY INC. is NOT supporting the Humane Society.
It is also posted on Mary Kay’s facebook page:

Please do not let this miscommunication/false advertisement, keep you from loving the #1 brand of skin care and color—Mary Kay!
Mary Kay Cosmetics is NOT a sponsor. Check out the website again…....Mary Kay is not there. They NEVER were a sponsor.
I followed the link to the HSUS “Spotlight Humane: Dallas- March 26, 2010” page, where I found this text:
“They continue to thrive because they prey on unwitting consumers who are smitten by too-cute-for-words puppies in pet store windows and on legitimate-seeming websites”
I guess that description applies to more than one operation.

I contacted Mary Kay Corp regarding this issue and they are totally unaware of this event and the legal department will be looking into this matter.
