Trading Up to the SPCA

In June, Mars Petcare donated more than 12 tons of dog food to help dog and cat owners keep their pets in the midst of the Gulf oil-spill crisis. You might remember that HSUS piggy-backed along for the ride—donating less than three percent as much food through its vegetarian "Humane Choice" brand, “coordinating” the delivery, and claiming most of the credit.
But HSUS is apparently out of the donated kibble delivery business. Mars made another enormous donation today, and HSUS wasn't invited to the party. Instead, Louisiana SPCA volunteers are leading the charge to distribute the pet food in their own communities.
As it should be.
Because of sloppy news reporting (and some reality-bending HSUS self-promotion), it wasn't always clear to the general public exactly who gave what in June.
PetFood Industry magazine reported, incorrectly: “HSUS donates 12 tons of Mars, own petfood to Louisiana.” HSUS itself produced a 3-minute film showing its employees delivering the pet food. And Wayne Pacelle bragged that HSUS had “already delivered 12.5 tons of pet food, generously donated by Mars Petcare, Inc. and The Humane Choice Company”—as if both donors carried the same load.
In some ways, you can’t really blame HSUS: The group wasn’t doing much to help animals in the Gulf region, so exaggerating its (minimal) role probably seemed like the familiar thing to do.
But this time around, Mars seems to have decided it would rather work with hands-on pet care people instead of incessant publicity-seekers. Or since the company's donation today included cat food, and no sensible veterinarian would recommend a feline vegetarian diet, perhaps HSUS decided to sit this one out.
Either way, the right people (actual Louisianans) are finally involved. We wish them, and all the pets displaced by the oil spill, well.

GREAT , now you gotta realize that you started what promises to be a good blog/comment session on your Dallas/$25,000 and dead cat story yesterday…..Jonnie England turned up and NOW, lo and behold, SO HAS HILLARY HSUS…...could get interesting since someone else “knocked” CCF and you know that story <G>
I understand that the group that actually donated the food should have gotten the credit, but isn’t the main point or goal of this to be sure to take care of the pets in need?? Let’s not get so bogged down with credit and blame that we forget the reason for the need and who it’s for. With all the people out of work all over the country I’m amazed that I don’t hear more about things like this. It’s when I see blame sessions going on about not getting the credit deserved that I ALMOST want to tune them all out. Let’s take care of the animals and sort out the credit later. I applaud all groups that are out there helping animals, whether it is for food or medical needs.
You know, if you were dealing with REASONABLE PEOPLE, what you say might be valid….when you have seen how crooked the H$U$ is, and it hits you that they are NOT REASONABLE PEOPLE, you learn to recognize it.
Crooks are crooks in all they do…learn to recognize it. I hope you learn that sooner rather than later because many of us learned it the hard way, years ago!!
Wait, maybe this is a better way to say this,
Being NICE doesn’t work with those folks, they see it as a weakness!!
Emily it does matter, because HSUS gets credit then the public thinks their donations go to a good cause. The Truth is more HSUS money goes to line pockets with pay, benefits and retirement than will ever be seen by a shelter animal.
So, people need to know where to donate their money to get the most for the animals.
Vegetarian food for dogs? Please! dogs are carnivores, they require meet product in their diet.
