Tweaking Animal Rights Activists Is a Dirty Job

One of the very first articles we ever published on HumaneWatch was titled “I Dare You to Disagree with Mike Rowe.”

The "Dirty Jobs" host and Ford pitch man is among the most trusted macho-spokes-dudes in America. And he has little patience for Wayne Pacelle and the Humane Society of the United States. Rowe is well-versed on (and, of course, has hands-on experience with) animal welfare issues, and he has become something of a champion to farmers whose way of life is routinely threatened by HSUS and other animal rights groups.

If you’ve seen "Dirty Jobs" recently, you might recall the show in which Rowe helps pollinate date palms and hangs out with sharpshooters. In one of that episode’s opening sequences, he reads a piece of his viewer mail.

It’s a nasty, barbed-tongue of a letter from a fan named “Wayne P.”

Real or not, the letter is a brilliant piece of theatre—not unlike the carefully screened and sanitized blog “comments” that Wayne Pacelle’s people choose to share. (Note: All the comments you read on this blog and on Facebook are real, unscripted, and unsolicited.)

Our favorite moment is Rowe’s chuckle when he reaches the end of the letter, as though he’s genuinely amused that the president of the Humane Society of the United States would make such a weak attempt to be clever. Or funny. Or whatever Pacelle is trying to be when his words drip with acid.

Dirty Jobs airs tonight (and most Tuesdays) at 9pm Eastern/Pacific on the Discovery Channel.

I knew who that letter was from. I loved that episode. And I loved how Mr. Rowe read it and how he responded to Wayne P.!!!!

I remember this episode.  I believe that the animals were being shot with tranquilizers in order to help/improve their lives.  I feel that in managing the herds and helping our animal friends is another way in helping God’s creatures.  We made their lives harder, its our responsibility to provide whatever means to improve their lot in life.

Mike Rowe is AWESOME!  He gets a lot of hate mail from PeTAphiles and humaniacs, but Discovery knows what a gem they have in him, so they’re not gonna let him go despite their loss of sanity on Animal Planet.

I don’t know the exact episode ‘Wayne P’ is talking about, but if you watch the episode where Mike shot the cow, after butchering Mike comments in the truck how it’s actually the most humane way to go. The cow doesn’t have to be loaded up in a scary trailer packed with a few dozen other terrified animals, shipped to a new place (crazy stress), then finally bludgeoned to death. It just got shot, and died instantly, in a place he felt most comfortable.

If Wayne P is really against tranquilizing animals for their own benefit (i.e. dental work so they can eat more efficiently, colic surgery to save their life, reduced stress in travel, etc) then perhaps he’s not as humane as his society claims to be.

I almost fell out of my chair when he said the “fan mail” was from Wayne P. Does the Discovery Channel even know he BLASTED Wayne Pacelle on National TV? It was awesome and I’ll be a fan forever because of it.

The new show “The Wild Within” on the Travel Channel is awesome. It shows hunting in a positve light and the host Steve Rinella is a great spokesperson for hunters rights. It’s just a matter of time before public outcry gets this show pulled unless we all send emails supporting it.

That, Mr. Rowe, was brilliant!

I’ve always like Mike Rowe—now I LOVE him! Good going, Mike. Tell it like it is. Far too many people—including Wayne P—are loading up the airways with self-serving garbage.
