What is HSUS? Let’s Ask Some Chicagoans
This Week in Agribusiness with Max Armstrong and Orion Samuelson (found on RFD-TV) just aired a series of "man on the street" interviews about HSUS.
Watch as ordinary Chicagoans learn what's what.

Thank you Max Armstrong and Orion Samuelson for taking a stand in Chicago. Your radio and television coverage have been a staple of the Midwest viewing and listening audience for decades and have garnered their respect for your professional discussion of agricultural issues and humane care of animals. Really nice to see this, David.
Awesome just awesome Reporting!
Now we just need this report to go NATIONAL!
Amen…..
I wish every news team in Missouri would do that!
Thanks for getting this information out. It’s people with no AG background that definitely need this information. The more momentum we gain with reports like this, the faster the truth will be told.
The HSUS is Humane for dogs, cats, wildlife and farm animals. Humane is for all creatures.
Abraham Lincoln said: “I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.”
Excellent.. HSUS has been getting away with this SCAM for over 50 years now. When is the United States Goverment going to do the RIGHT thing for once and make these people CHANGE THEIR NAME. Humane Society of America is very misleading. It does nothing but promote misconceptions as to who or what this group actually does or does NOT do. This group nor any other like it is in NO way affiliated with your local HS. HSUS has taken in BILLIONS off of this misconception and our local community shelters have suffered direly because of it. THIS group and others like it such as the ASPCA have take millions off of these misguided “Puppy Mill Raid Commericals”. HSUS doesnt even OWN a dog shelter. NO-ONE can say this is anything BUT donation fraud. To me when you say Humane Society of “AMERICA” you are representing to US, the doner that you are OUR humane society.. HSUS, you are NOT my humane society. MY humane society is going broke because of YOU! You should NOT do commericals showing DOG raids and rescues when you dont even take care of your OWN PUPPY MILL RAID ANIMALS. That is FRAUD!
The next question should be, Part 1. “when you donated to HSUS, because of their puppy mill raid commercials, did you know that HSUS does not even own a dog shelter or facility to care for these animals?” Part 2 Did you know that HSUS dumps their puppy mill raid dogs off on large city shelters that euthanize or did you think that, because of their puppy mill raid commercials of how they save these animals from dire straights, that they were actually using the near $200 million dollars a year donations to save these animals? ASPCA also dumps the larger portion of their raid animals off on HS like Atlanta and many other Kill shelters. HSUS and ASPCA both do this. Because of the “self aired” commercials that HSUS and ASPCA do, people don’t realize in the confusion that many of these animals that they dump off on large city pounds/humane societies end up euthanized as a consequence of these “life saving” raids. This is how ASPCA and HSUS keep their hands clean, because they don’t do the killing PERSONALLY, they don’t have to show the kill stats that happen in the aftermath of their “raid and dump puppy mill raid RESCUES”... ITS FRAUD.. Note: PETA doesn’t care how many dogs and cats they kill.. Their kill stats are available online. In around 20 years, PETA has an “average” kill rate of 90+% of all dogs and cats that come into their “rescue shelter”. Last several years, they killed an average of over 97%++.. In 09 Peta killed over 2500 dogs and cats while homing just eight. The only real difference there is in PETA and HSUS OR ASPCA, is that PETA doesn’t care who knows how many animals they kill. HSUS and ASPCA fraudulently hide their kill rates in the cover-up scheme just described above.. FRAUD YOU SAY?
The Puppy mill raid animals do not “belong” to HSUS. The HSUS didn’t cause the underlying problem. If you are upset about the killing of millions of healthy dogs and cats at overwhelmed shelters, the answer is:
1) Ban breeding of pets until all shelters are operating on a no-kill basis (not killing healthy, adoptable animals)
2) Short of a ban, this country needs to severely limit who is allowed to breed: EVERY breeder should be licensed, pass a licensing exam before getting licensed and get inspected at least as often as we inspect restaurants
3) End retail sales of pets from pet stores (the demand side of the puppy mill trade)
4) Require the spay/neuter of pets before they are adopted/purchased and provide low cost spay/neuter services
I hope that everyone who is upset is volunteering at their local shelters and demanding reform from elected officials so we can stop the puppy mills problem at its source.
And if you don’t like HSUS/PETA/etc., you don’t have to support them.
Nikkita, you are dead WRONG. Banning and taking away rights is nothing less than insanity. The vast majority of animals in shelters are poorly bred, unplanned, and the result of irresponsible OWNERSHIP, not responsible breeding. Teach OWNERS to be responsible. If you push your licensing theory, guess WHO can afford to get licenses? COMMERCIAL breeders who do not breed for health nor for correct breed conformation or characteristics. Those are the same ones you don’t want to be allowed to sell animals at all.
Besides, this “overpopulation” thing is largely a untruth perpetrated by animal rights zealots. If there SO much over population, how come places like North Shore Animal League IMPORT puppies from other countries to sell?
“One of the greatest delusions of the world is the HOPE that the EVILS of this world are to be CURED BY LEGISLATION.” Thomas B. Reed 1886
Reed was right then, and still is.
Nakita.. From what planet do you come that you think they US Gov or your locals can BAN the breeding of ANYTHING?.. What would make you think that people should NOT be allowed to breed dogs and cats when they breed tens of millions of chickens, pigs cows, and other live stock just to feed your hungry belly EVERY YEAR, and you should SEE how “humane” those conditions are comparatively.. People have this Idea that someone you can raise enough “chickens, cows, hogs” in these wonderful, beautiful meadows, where they can “free roam” just waiting for the day that their heads will be chopped off and put on your kitchen table for consumption..Do you know what kind of work and “milling” it takes to put out hundreds of millions of pounds of raw meat every year?
I wish I understood what the heck this ridiculously poor piece of journalism was about. From the tone it seemed that the HSUS was being chastised for not being what it represents itself as, but nothing was said about what it really is or does. The source of the criticism was a show that is about agriculture business and therefore, presumably, has a bias toward the business aspect. I would think it would be incumbent on them to really make their case that much more clearly, but there was no case at all! What’s the argument? Where’s the evidence? Is this how we make decisions about what and who are right and wrong these days??? (BTW, before the flames begin, I am NOT pro HSUS. In fact, I am not pro (or anti) anything if someone can’t give me a reasonable illustration of their point.)
AB- This very well written article is designed to make people think for themselves, and thus, research for themselves exactly what H$U$ is and does. Let me give you some things to consider, and I insist on only ONE condition…you do NOT use the H$U$‘s own sites, meaning you do not consult ANY organization that hides the fact that it is parented by the H$U$, like PCRM, for your self-education efforts either, not just the H$U$‘s own site.
Did you know that the H$U$ only uses 1/2% of each donation given for actual animals in need, in spite of those heart-breaking commercials starring starved, abused animals? Look up their IRS records, which, as a 501c3 non-profit, are open for public scrutiny. If you give the H$U$ $200, your money will buy just about 1 can of dog food, and the rest will be spent on campaigns to harrass legally operating farms, hunters, zoos, circuses, and to raise more money, bolster pensions for the higher ups, and work towards the end of ALL human/animal relationships including your PETS.
“Ending pets?” you ask. Yep. H$U$ thinks no human/animal relationships should exist. You think the H$U$ ‘loves animals”? Not really. Do a search on “HSUS quotes”. How about these couple here: When asked if he envisioned a future without pets, “If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don’t want to see another dog or cat born.” Wayne Pacelle
and “I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals…To this day I don’t feel bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.” Wayne Pacelle
or maybe “We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding. . One generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.” Wayne Pacelle
THIS is what the H$U$ is, and you can find the truth if you look. But the knowledge is only gained by those willing to question the propaganda they’ve been fed since their youth. Geeze! As a kid, even *I* was brainwashed. I used to send my babysitting and yardwork money to the H$U$, and in return, I’d get a magazine full of gory photos and stories of abused, starved dogs and cats, along with a guilt-inducing letter about how I could send MORE money to ‘save’ them. That was when I was 9 years old. I didn’t figure it out until I started volunteering, then became an employee of a REAL shelter. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the H$U$ not only did not give in any way to support our shelter, but CHARGED shelters like ours for their ‘advice’ on how to improve our own group. Are you thinking what I did? My reaction was, “Wait a minute!!! YOU don’t run ANY shelters, don’t feed ANY animals, don’t do ANY cruelty investigations, but want us to PAY you for your ‘expert’ advice?!?! What the hell is WRONG with this picture?!?!”
Yep. H$U$...what the hell is wrong with this picture?
