HSUS Slammed in Colorado, Faces Calls for New Investigation
Today the Colorado Springs Gazette launched a broadside against the deceptive Humane Society of the United States. The paper’s editorial board came out swinging at HSUS’s lack of support for local pet shelters, writing, “Truth is, donating to the Humane Society of the United States does almost nothing to help organizations that unquestionably improve animal welfare, such as local shelters, the American Humane Association, the Dumb Friends League and yes, the local Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.”
The editorial endorses a complaint we filed against HSUS with the Colorado Secretary of State regarding the fundraising practices of HSUS. As many readers are aware, HSUS raises money with ads full of dogs and cats and yet doesn’t run a single pet shelter, isn’t affiliated with local humane societies, and donates only 1 penny of every dollar raised to pet shelters.
Additionally, 29 sportsmen groups signed a letter of support regarding our complaint, while Colorado Peak Politics, an influential blog, also chimed in this week in favor of our complaint. We’ll likely know by the end of the year whether Colorado will investigate HSUS. If it does, it will join Oklahoma, whose Attorney General Scott Pruitt has an ongoing investigation into HSUS’s fundraising.
We make clear the damage in our complaint, laying out specific HSUS fundraising deception, quotes from local humane societies across America about the confusion between HSUS and their organization, and complaints lodged by HSUS donors themselves. HSUS will do its best to create distractions and spin, but it should be a slam dunk. Stay tuned.
