Leighann McCollum

Leighann McCollum is HSUS's Tennessee State Director, responsible for legislative and lobbying programs in that state. (Click here for HSUS's Tennessee-specific Facebook page.)

McCollum left her position at the Animal Legal Defense Fund to join HSUS in 2007.

In 2009, she began mobilizing grassroots efforts to oppose proposed legislation to permit horse farms to operate slaughterhouses, rather than having to ship animals to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. The legislation is supported by various horse-owner associations and the Farm Bureau, but State Rep. Frank Niceley says “the only ones against it are PETA and the Humane Society of the United States.”
